This September, Amicura Care Group is proud to support World Alzheimer’s Month and help raise greater awareness and understanding of dementia in the UK care homes. 💜

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing meaningful activities, stories and special moments from across our care homes, celebrating connection, creativity and the everyday experiences that matter to our residents, families and teams.

As Alzheimer's Society reminds us, dementia affects us all, and everyone has a role to play in creating greater awareness and understanding.

This month is our care homes are supporting this month with meaningful moments.

☕ Hug in a Mug: Sharing Memories, Music and Meaningful Moments

Our residents are enjoying Hug in a Mug sessions at Haslingden Hall in Rossendale, a monthly visit from Trisha from the local church that brings everyone together through singing, reminiscence, conversation and optional prayer.

Each session has a different theme, and this time it explored India 🇮🇳. In the days leading up to the session, residents were supported through one-to-one conversations to remember stories, experiences and memories connected to the theme, which they could then share with the group.

The session finished in the best way with a warm cuppa, a relaxed chat and time for residents to share their thoughts, stories and comments. ❤️

Activities like Hug in a Mug are about much more than filling the day. They encourage reminiscence, social interaction, emotional wellbeing and meaningful connections, while allowing every resident to participate in a way that feels comfortable to them.

Charlotte Fabian, 104, from Liberton Brae Care Home - Amicura in Edinburgh, joined nine-year-old Isla and seven-year-old Ewan from Tollcross Primary School as some of the first members of the public welcomed back into the newly redeveloped King’s Theatre Edinburgh.

For Charlotte, a lifelong visitor to the Kings Theatre, returning to such a familiar and much-loved Edinburgh landmark made the occasion even more meaningful.

We were also delighted to see Charlotte’s story featured by BBC News in its coverage of the reopening of the King’s Theatre following its refurbishment.

A wonderful example of how memories, community connections and shared experiences can continue across generations.

"Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside!" 🏖️

Our residents of Liberton Brae Care Home - Amicura made the most of the sunshine this week with a trip down to Portobello Beach ☀️

A huge thank you to Beach Wheelchairs Portobello , a small Scottish charity that helps people get right onto the sand and down to the water. Kath and Margaret took Jeannette and Anna for a paddle, with plenty of laughing along the way.

Accessible days out like this are what wellbeing at our Edinburgh care home is all about. 🌞

Some days simply call for a little taste testing.

Carnbroe Care Centre marked National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day with a selection of different cookies for residents to sample, and there was certainly no shortage of willing volunteers.

The treats continued for National Raspberries and Cream Day, when Carnbroe’s very own ice cream truck made its way around the home, delivering raspberries and cream directly to residents across the units. 🚍

Small themed activities like these bring variety into the day and give residents opportunities to enjoy familiar flavours, conversation and a little bit of fun together.

Life at Carnbroe Care Centre in Coatbridge is shaped around individual interests, everyday enjoyment and a lifestyle programme that keeps plenty happening throughout the week.

She spent her career looking after other people. She has not really stopped. 💙

Meet Janet, our lovely resident at Kingsley in Paisley.

Janet was an NHS nurse for most of her working life, caring for people on some of their hardest days. Since moving into residential care at Kingsley, that same kindness has simply found a new home.

She joins in with nearly everything on the activities programme, but knitting and sewing are where she is happiest. Janet sews her own name into every piece of her clothing herself, because doing it properly matters to her.

What she treasures most is her group of friends here. Plenty of laughter, plenty of looking out for one another. 🧶
