Kimberley's story

"When I found out I was having twins,
I thought my hopes of breastfeeding were over
but with huge thanks to the support from Breastfeeding Twins and Triplets UK
I’ve been breastfeeding for
8 months and still going strong.

From the very early days of the preparing to breastfeed zoom sessions to tongue tie,
triple feeding, ni**le shields,
and questionable weight gain
to two thriving boys and a happy mama.

We’ve recommended BFT&T to all
the health professionals we’ve encountered on
our journey, and to the multiples mums we know."

Some big baby myths dispelled

My youngest was a whopping 4.45kg when he was born. 9lb 13 oz in old money. So I've heard all the big baby myths!

*You will need a c-section
*You will need to be induced
*You will need an episiotomy

Now I have had c-section and 2 VBACs (vaginal birth after caesarian). And I'm very aware that birth does not always go as planned. Our current health care system is very good at gas-lighting women into agreeing to medicalised birth. But it is possible for a 5"2 woman to birth a 4.45g baby on just gas and air, resulting in a small tear. This was my second vaginal delivery. But my first vaginal delivery baby was 4.005kg, so not exactly small! (I was induced with my twins but never made it to full dilation despite the fact they were much smaller. They were not ready to come out when the doctors wanted them to!)
I put my ability to birth a big baby down to hypnobirthing, playing the saxophone and luck! I didn't play the saxophone during labour, haha, but I do have very good breath control and understanding of my internal muscles!

*Big babies need more milk
*Big babies feed more
*You'll need to give formula if you have a big baby

Although the calculation we use in the early days is based on baby's weight, it only works out a matter of a few mls per feed. One extra feed in 24 hours could give you that milk without needing more volume per feed. My big baby sure did enjoy a cluster feed, but so did my others. By a month to 6 weeks, babies often take a similar amount of milk, whatever their size, and it will not really increase from that point. There is no evidence that larger babies need more milk long-term. The average baby takes about 750-800ml of breast milk in 24 hours, some a bit more, some less, between 1-6 mths

*Big babies sleep through the night sooner
*Babies sleep through the night when they reach 6kg or 12lb or whatever weight you read on the internet

My particular specimen of big baby didn't sleep through regularly until he was 3.5 yrs. But they are all different!

*Big babies are more chilled out

Er, not my one! My 100% orchid, cling-on, velcro, sensitive, high needs child

How about you?

✨️ IBCLC GROUPS SUPERVISION ✨️
Zoom session

Are you a lactation consultant in private practice? Are you working on your own and feel you need a village?
Come to our group supervision zoom session where we can bounce ideas about case studies, business and debriefing. We will open up a safe space to share.

Quote "Come for a national virtual hug"

FRIDAY
26th of June
9,30 am on Zoom

Tickets £35

This session is run by Miriam Feen IBCLC, breastfeeding specialist and Kathryn Stagg IBCLC and Holistic Sleep Coach, both experienced IBCLCs who have been working for 13 years and 8 years respectively.

Miriam brings her experience of working in the NHS and balancing this with private practice. Kathryn comes from a volunteer breastfeeding counsellor and breastfeeding charity background.
Not only will we cover any cases or situations that you would like to discuss and how we can support families as effectively as possible, we also can talk about the intricate side of running a business, marketing, and social media. We also have extensive experience in running group workshops both in person and online.

Come along, connect, get support, make contact with like-minded people, debrief difficult work, find out how others are reaching families, brainstorm ideas.

Regulating ourselves is actually one of the most challenging things about being a parent. Our kids, and especially toddlers, seem to find all our triggers, push all the buttons, and stretch boundaries to their limit.

Remember, this is actually their job! This is how they find out about the world and how it works.

Here are some tools for helping in this situation (see carousel).

Exciting, look what has arrived on my doorstep!

The updated version of Holistic Sleep Coaching by Dr Lyndsey Hookway

I am looking forward to taking a deep dive into this over the next week or two.

If you are someone who works with babies and toddlers, you need to read this! It covers all of the sleep biology, more complex problems, and things that you can suggest to help.

I will report back once I have had a good delve! This will be my summer project. But the original version was already exceptionally good. This one is likely to be even better.

In my recent Q&A I was asked what is my favourite breastfeeding fact.

Do you know what is one of the best ways to cope with frequent night waking?

Stop looking at the clock

Accept that night waking is normal

This can make a huge difference!

Then, focus on what you can put in place to help you cope with biologically normal baby sleep.

Trust me, it's much better not to know how often you were feeding!

Did you stop looking at the clock?
How was this for you?

So many families are tracking everything. But opening your phone during a night feed is probably one of the worst things you can do for your own sleep.

Would you believe it, I proofread that second slide!!! Why does the brain only notice typos once you press "post".

Top tip

Take a photo of the scales when you weigh your baby

Its very easy for them to mistake 2.646 for 2.464 (or similar!)

Also check the plotting on the weight chart. Today at our The Lactation Corner - IBCLC clinic, we spotted that the previous weight for this baby, which was 2.345, was plotted at about 2.8 on the chart. This baby had put on 300g in 8 days! But had we not double-checked the plotting, it looked like baby had crossed 2 percentiles downwards due to the mistake at the previous weigh-in.

Over the years, I have seen many weights listed or plotted that have most definitely been a mistake.
