🐟 WHAT DOES “EAT WELL, DON’T STARVE” ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

This was my recovery meal after a very demanding TrainFit Challenge day:

🐟 Salmon for quality protein and omega-3 fats
🥔 One carb pot of mash to replenish the energy used during training
🥬 Loads of kale for fibre and micronutrients
🍅 Homemade tomato, onion and courgette sauce
🧀 A little Parmesan for extra flavour

No tiny portions. No cutting out carbohydrates. No surviving on salad—and no need for complicated “diet” food!

If we want to lose body fat while maintaining our valuable muscle, we need enough protein, balanced carbohydrates, plenty of colourful plants and food that actually satisfies us.

Training breaks the body down. Good nutrition and recovery allow it to rebuild stronger. 💪🏻

Your meals don’t need to be perfect or fancy—they simply need to support what you’re asking your body to do.

Eat well. Train well. Recover well. 💙

🥱 THE FOUNDATIONS OF GOOD HEALTH ARE BORING!

Sorry… I can’t make them sexy! 😂

There’s no magic supplement, detox, quick fix or perfect diet that replaces consistently practising the basics:

🥗 Eat mostly nutritious food
🥩 Include enough protein
🥦 Eat plenty of plants and fibre
💧 Drink enough water
🚶‍♀️ Walk and move every day
🏋🏼‍♀️ Build and maintain muscle
😴 Prioritise sleep and recovery
🧠 Manage stress where you can
❤️ Look after your relationships and mental health
🔁 Keep going—even when it isn’t perfect

That’s what we teach at DPP Fitness & Nutrition.

Not punishment.
Not restriction.
Not chasing perfection.

Just improving your everyday habits—and giving your body time to respond.

The basics might be boring…but they work! 🙌🏼

Which basic habit do you know you need to work on right now? 👀👇🏼

WHY DO WE NEED CARBOHYDRATES—EVEN WHEN TRYING TO LOSE FAT?

Carbohydrates are often the first food group people blame when they want to lose weight—but carbs themselves don’t automatically cause weight gain!

Interestingly, nobody worries that eating too much protein might affect their progress and cause fat gain!

The truth is, consistently overeating calories from carbohydrate, fat or protein can contribute to weight gain.

Carbohydrates are our body’s preferred source of readily available energy and are particularly useful for:

🏋️ Fuelling exercise and higher-intensity training
🧠 Supporting concentration and brain function
🚶 Maintaining energy throughout the day
💪 Replenishing muscle glycogen after training
💩 Providing fibre for your bowels and gut bacteria
🍽️ Making meals enjoyable, satisfying and sustainable

Fat loss occurs when you consistently use more energy than you consume—not simply because you’ve removed bread, rice or potatoes.

The type and portion still matter.

A sensible serving of minimally processed, fibre-rich carbohydrate is very different from regularly eating large portions of cakes, biscuits, sweets and crisps.

💙 GOOD CARBOHYDRATE CHOICES

🥣 Oats
🥔 Potatoes or sweet potatoes
🍚 Brown or basmati rice
🍝 Wholemeal pasta
🍞 Wholegrain bread
🫘 Beans, chickpeas and lentils
🌾 Quinoa or pearl barley
🍎 Fruit and vegetables

These provide fibre, vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds—not just carbohydrates.

💡 DPP TOP TIP

Pair your carbohydrate pot with protein, vegetables and a little healthy fat to create a balanced, satisfying meal.

You may benefit from slightly more carbohydrate around harder training days and a little less on quiet rest days—but there’s usually no need to remove it completely.

Remember: eating more carbohydrate than usual can temporarily increase your weight because glycogen is stored with water. That is not the same as gaining body fat!

QUICK QUESTION 👀

Which carbohydrate would you find hardest to give up?

🥔 Potatoes
🍞 Bread
🍝 Pasta
🍚 Rice
🥣 Oats
🍫 I’m counting chocolate! 😂

🔥 “CORTISOL BELLY” — IS THAT REALLY WHY MENOPAUSAL FAT WON’T BUDGE?

I’ve seen yet another advert claiming menopausal women can’t lose belly fat because cortisol has “locked it in”—and that only a precisely timed fasting window will unlock it within 14 days. 🙈🙊

There is a tiny little truth hidden underneath a LOT of clever marketing!

During menopause, falling oestrogen can change where we store fat, meaning more may settle around the abdomen.

But it isn’t caused by cortisol alone. Midlife body-composition changes can involve:

🌿 Falling oestrogen
💪 Gradual muscle loss
😴 Poor sleep
🧠 Ongoing stress
🩸 Changes in insulin sensitivity
🚶🏼‍♀️ Reduced everyday movement
🍽️ Changes in appetite and eating habits

Cortisol can influence appetite, cravings and fat distribution—but it doesn’t “lock” fat in place.

Calories haven’t suddenly stopped mattering after 45, and there is no magical fasting window that melts menopausal belly fat!

This is why DPP Fitness & Nutrition doesn’t offer another quick fix.

We help you understand what YOUR body needs through:

🩵 A personalised nutrition plan
🥗 Protein, fibre and balanced meals
🏋🏼‍♀️ Strength training to protect precious muscle
🚶🏼‍♀️ Support with movement and daily habits
🌙 Education around sleep, stress and menopause
📊 Styku scans to monitor fat, muscle and body-shape changes—not just weight
❤️ Ongoing support without blame, shame or ridiculous promises

Menopause can make progress more challenging—but your body isn’t broken, and you haven’t failed.

You simply need a realistic plan that works with your health, lifestyle and changing body—not a 60-second “cortisol quiz”! 😂

Have you ever been told that cortisol is the ONLY reason you can’t lose belly fat? 👇🏼

ARE YOU “SKINNY FAT”? 👀

You might look slim, wear a smaller clothing size and have a “healthy” BMI—but still carry more body fat and have less muscle than is ideal.

The phrase “skinny fat” isn’t a medical diagnosis, but it usually describes someone who has:

⚖️ A normal body weight
💪 Lower muscle mass
📈 A higher body-fat percentage
🍎 More fat stored around the waist

This is why the scales—and even BMI—don’t always tell the whole story!

A Styku 3D body scan can help by estimating and tracking:

✅ Body-fat percentage
✅ Lean mass
✅ Waist and body measurements
✅ Body shape and where changes are occurring
✅ Progress that might not show on the scales

The aim isn’t simply to become lighter. It may be to build muscle, improve bone density, reduce body fat and improve your body composition—even if your weight barely changes.

Please remember: Styku is a useful progress-tracking tool, not a medical diagnostic test. Your trends over several scans matter more than one individual result.

Stop chasing the lowest number on the scales. Let’s focus on becoming stronger, healthier and better fuelled! 💪🏼

🔥 WHY DO I NEED TO REST AFTER A BIG CHALLENGE?Whether it’s HYROX, the End of Summer Death March or Debt Collector, first...

🔥 WHY DO I NEED TO REST AFTER A BIG CHALLENGE?

Whether it’s HYROX, the End of Summer Death March or Debt Collector, first ask yourself:

What will I actually gain from training hard again the next day?

More muscle growth? More fat loss?

Probably not!

I completed HYROX yesterday and my weight was 2.5 lb higher this morning.

Have I suddenly gained 2.5 lb of body fat? Absolutely not! I’ve Pot Planned well and certainly haven’t eaten the roughly 8,750 extra calories it would theoretically take to store that much fat.

That increase is far more likely to be temporary fluid caused by:

💧 Inflammation from muscle damage
💪 Replenishing glycogen—which is stored with water
🧂 Changes in fluid and sodium balance
😴 The physical stress of a demanding event

“But I feel fine today, so I could train…right?”

You might feel capable—but DOMS often doesn’t fully appear until 24–48 hours later and may peak up to 72 hours after a tough event.

Intense exercise creates tiny amounts of muscle damage and triggers an inflammatory response. Your body then needs time,, food, fluid and protein to repair that tissue and adapt.

If you train hard again too soon, you may:

❌ Prolong soreness and fatigue
❌ Reduce the quality of your sessions later in the week
❌ Compromise technique as tired muscles compensate
❌ Increase your risk of niggles or injury
❌ Slow recovery rather than speed up results

Muscle isn’t built during the workout—it’s built while you recover from it.

And one extra punishing workout won’t magically accelerate fat loss.

A recovery day can still include:

🚶🏼‍♀️ A gentle walk
🧘🏼‍♀️ Light mobility
💧 Plenty of fluid
🥗 Balanced meals—not restricting food because the scales increased
💪🏼 Enough protein and carbohydrate to support recovery
😴 An early night

Rest is not laziness. Rest is part of the programme.

Train hard. Recover properly. Come back stronger. 💙
