Shortly after birth, Dulcie became seriously ill with group B Strep infection and spent two weeks in neonatal intensive care. Thankfully, she recovered, but it was a frightening and overwhelming time for the whole family.

During that time, Andii found support and information through GBSS, helping their family understand what had happened and feel less alone.

Andii said: “Last year, I walked 31 Miles in October alongside Dulcie and her proud big sister Lyla to raise awareness and funds for GBSS. It's a cause very close to our hearts.”

Behind every statistic is a baby. And a family whose life changed in an instant.

This September, we're proud to support the The UK Sepsis Trust's Trust Your Instincts campaign, encouraging people to recognise the signs of sepsis and seek urgent medical help when something doesn't feel right.

Group B Strep is the most common cause of severe infection in newborn babies and can lead to sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis.

Too many families in our community know first-hand just how devastating sepsis can be. Some have lost babies they love. Others have watched a desperately ill newborn fight for their life. All carry an experience they never expected to have.

Their experiences remind us why awareness matters. When parents tell us something isn't right, we need to listen. Because recognising the signs and acting quickly can make a life-changing difference.

No family should have to face the heartbreak of a serious infection that could potentially have been prevented. We're proud to stand alongside the UK Sepsis Trust this Sepsis Awareness Month. Preventing infection, improving care and raising awareness isn't the responsibility of any one organisation. It takes all of us working together.

If your baby has been affected by group B Strep infection, you're not alone. 💙

We'd like to remind families that support is available.

Having a baby develop group B Strep infection can be a traumatic and life-changing experience. While every family's experience is different, many people tell us that connecting with others who have been through similar situations can make a real difference.

That's why we run a private Facebook group for parents, family members and others affected by a baby's group B Strep infection. It's a supportive space where members can share experiences, ask questions, and connect with others who understand.

💗 Baby Loss Awareness Week is now just one month away.

Taking place from 9-15 October, Baby Loss Awareness Week is an opportunity to remember and honour the babies who died during pregnancy, were stillborn, or died shortly after birth or in infancy.

Many families in the GBSS community will be taking part, remembering their babies who sadly died as a result of group B Strep infection, and helping to raise awareness of the lasting impact of baby loss.

Family experience videos, co-produced by GBSS and Group B Strep International, have been shown at the start of each day at an international group B Strep conference, helping to bring real family voices into conversations about the future of prevention and care.

GBSS is in Aarhus, Denmark making sure families are part of the conversation about the future of group B Strep prevention.

Our Chief Executive, Jane Plumb, and Advocacy & Information Manager, Oliver Plumb, are attending the Readiness for Group B Streptococcus Maternal Immunisation Symposium, bringing together researchers, public health experts, policymakers and advocates from across Europe.

Jane has been invited to join a panel on Next Steps for GBS Across Europe, bringing the experiences and priorities of families affected by group B Strep into discussions about future prevention and care.

We’re also proud that lived-experience videos developed by GBSS in partnership with Group B Strep International are being shown at the symposium – helping keep families’ experiences at the heart of conversations about research, policy and potential future maternal GBS vaccination programmes.

💙 Families need to be part of these conversations from the outset – and we’re proud to be there representing their voices.

The first textbook dedicated entirely to group B Strep is now available.

Group B Strep is a leading cause of severe infection in newborn babies, yet awareness and understanding remain too low.

That's why we're so pleased to see the publication of Group B Streptococcus in Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Neonatal Period; the first textbook focused entirely on group B Strep.

Bringing together the latest evidence, expert clinical knowledge and the experiences of families affected by group B Strep, it is an important new resource for everyone involved in maternity, neonatal and newborn care.

Better understanding leads to better prevention, better care and, ultimately, better outcomes for babies and families.

For many families affected by group B Strep, neonatal nurses become part of their story – caring not only for babies, but also for the parents and families who love them. 💕

Elsie's family experienced this first-hand. Born prematurely, Elsie spent 65 days in NICU before coming home. Then, at just 10 weeks old, she was readmitted with late-onset group B Strep sepsis and meningitis. Thanks to the care she received, Elsie went on to make a full recovery.

This International Neonatal Nurses Day, we're saying a heartfelt thank you to neonatal nurses everywhere. Whether caring for babies born too soon, babies fighting infection, or supporting families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives, your skill, kindness and dedication make an enormous difference.
