This lady attended the clinic yesterday after perforating her eardrum a week ago. She had already been started on antibiotics due to an infection.

As you can see from the photo, the perforation is clearly visible, and the ear canal appears red and inflamed.

A perforated eardrum can take several weeks to several months to heal, depending on the size and cause of the tear. It is important to see your GP if you suspect you have a perforated eardrum, keep the ear as dry as possible, and avoid putting anything into the ear.

If you experience worsening pain, discharge, dizziness, or a sudden change in hearing, seek medical advice promptly.

I had a lovely time on Saturday morning visiting Carnkie Village Hall and meeting the locals during one of their breakfast clubs, offering free ear health examinations.

What a lovely bunch they were - they made me feel so welcome. It was a pleasure to be able to spend the morning with them and help raise awareness of the importance of looking after your ear health. 👂✨

Foreign bodies 👂

This patient attended thinking part of his hearing aid might be stuck in one ear. After safely removing a hearing aid dome, I suggested we check the health of the other ear while he was here.

And guess what we found? Another dome - the patient had no idea it was there or how long it had been in place!

It was buried under wax and needed a bit of persuasion to remove, but we got there in the end.
