I’m always reminding people mouths aren’t really designed for breathing 😮‍💨

Most of us never think about how we breathe. But the path the air takes makes a difference.

Research suggests that breathing through your nose, rather than your mouth, offers real physiological advantages.

Here is what your nose does that your mouth cannot.

It filters, warms, and humidifies the air. It also adds a molecule called nitric oxide, produced in your sinuses, that helps your blood vessels relax and improves how well oxygen is delivered to your body.

Nasal breathing also tends to be slower and deeper, which gently nudges your nervous system toward calm.

Mouth breathing, by contrast, is often faster and shallower, and is linked with poorer sleep when it happens at night.

Here is the actionable practice.

Through the day, especially at rest and during easy walks, gently close your mouth and breathe through your nose.

It may feel odd at first if you are used to mouth breathing, but it becomes natural with practice.

Slow nasal breaths, in and out through the nose, are a simple way to support both calm and circulation.

At night, gently encouraging nasal breathing, by addressing congestion or seeing a clinician about snoring, can meaningfully improve the quality of your sleep.

Could you spend a few minutes breathing only through your nose today?
