Endocrinopathic laminitis is the most diagnosed form of laminitis. Horses with metabolic issues such as EMS or PPID are more at risk during Autumn.

In autumn, pasture sugar (non-structural carbohydrate, or NSC) levels can rise due to:

🌱 Cool nights and sunny days
🌱 Reduced grass growth
🌱Frosty sunny days
🌱 Drought, cold, or nutrient stress (common in autumn)

Horses with metabolic issues cannot regulate blood glucose uptake using insulin. Grazing pasture high in sugars, especially frosty mornings, means that blood glucose levels remain high and insulin is continually produced ( hyperinsulinemia). High levels of insulin directly causes laminitis.

Laminitis in autumn can often be the first clinical sign of PPID. Horses with PPID (Cushing's) experience exaggerated levels in the steroid hormone ACTH during autumn - causing high levels of insulin and blood glucose levels, which can cause laminitis. Grazing autumn pasture high in sugars/fructans can also contribute.
