Grass is set to have a surge in growth with the forecast rain this week and warmer weather next week, meaning an increase in sugars/calories.

If you have a horse or pony that is prone colic, to putting weight on quickly, is insulin resistant/metabolic and prone to laminitis please be vigilant.

Subtle signs that grass may be affecting your horse include:

🌱 Digestive disturbances - bloating, gas, soft or loose droppings, droppings smell acrid etc.
🌱Sensitive to walking on hard ground - footiness
🌱 Difficulty turning in a circle
🌱 Stiffness
🌱 Bounding digital pulse

Digestive health can have an impact on the whole wellbeing of your horse - physically & emotionally.

Testing the pH of your horse's manure regularly can give you an idea of what is normal for them.

Using these results alongside other physical and visual observations can help determine their digestive health. Results can help with management & nutrition choices.

Normal faecal pH should be in the range of 6.5-7. Anything below 6.5 may indicate acidity in the hindgut which can cause discomfort & health issues.

Testing the pH or your horse's droppings is easy to do. We find using a soil testing kit gives better results than using paper pH strips.

You can buy a simple pH soil testing kit from your garden centre - just follow the instructions, but use fresh manure instead of the soil.

Monitoring your horse's droppings

Your horse's droppings can tell you a lot about the health of your horse's gut, especially now with changes in grazing, grass and management.

1. Numbers passed per day - usually horses pass between 6-12 droppings in a 24hr period. So learn what is normal for your horse

2. Consistency - droppings should always be formed, but not dry & hard. Any which are watery, or diarrhoea can indicate serious gut problems, loose or soft & unformed can indicate hind gut acidity and a lack of fibre.

3. Smell - any which smell acrid or strongly can indicate lower acidity in the hind gut

4. pH - regularly checking the pH of fresh droppings using a soil pH kit can hind gut acidity, if the reading is less than 6.5

Acidity in the hind gut leads to negative changes in the microbiome, often causing gut discomfort. Emotional, physical & musculo-skeletal issues may result.
