Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common reasons people come to see us — and treatment isn't just about "living with it."

Exercise and strengthening remain the most effective long-term approach for knee arthritis, even though that can feel counterintuitive when the knee is painful. Alongside this, injections (such as steroid or hyaluronic acid/viscosupplementation) can offer useful short-to-medium term relief, particularly to help you get moving and into a rehab programme more comfortably.

Injections work best as a bridge to exercise-based treatment, not a replacement for it. We'll talk you through which option, if any, makes sense for your knee.

Steroid injections are a treatment option many patients ask us about for rotator cuff-related shoulder pain and frozen shoulder.

For rotator cuff problems, a steroid injection can reduce inflammation and pain enough to make rehab exercises more comfortable and effective — it's often used alongside physiotherapy, not instead of it.

For frozen shoulder, injections tend to help most in the early, painful "freezing" stage, easing pain and sometimes speeding up recovery, particularly when combined with guided movement and stretching.

Steroid injections aren't right for everyone, and they're not a standalone fix — they work best as part of a wider treatment plan. We'd always assess your shoulder properly first to see whether it's a suitable option for you.

Is your shoulder pain actually coming from your neck?

It's a really common mix-up. Shoulder pain that flares up gradually, feels achy rather than sharp, or doesn't improve with rest can sometimes originate from the neck rather than the shoulder joint itself.

The nerves that supply the shoulder and upper arm exit from the neck (cervical spine), so irritation or stiffness there can refer pain down into the shoulder and sometimes the arm. This is sometimes called 'referred pain', and it's one reason two people with a sore shoulder can need very different treatment plans.

A few signs it might be neck-related:
🔹 Pain that changes with head or neck position, not just shoulder movement
🔹 Pins and needles or numbness travelling down the arm
🔹 Stiffness or reduced movement in the neck itself
🔹 Shoulder X-rays or scans that come back 'normal'

A proper physiotherapy assessment looks at the whole picture — shoulder, neck, and how they move together — rather than treating the site of pain in isolation.

If your shoulder pain hasn't settled the way you'd expect, it may be worth getting it assessed properly rather than assuming it's 'just the shoulder'. We're here in Herne Bay if you'd like an opinion.
