A few years ago, I was at the GP to discuss the option of HRT.
I was struggling with all these random symptoms - night sweats, anxiety, brain fog, bloating, exhaustion - and I wanted confirmation that this was indeed perimenopause.
The doctor agreed that it was, talked me through the options and sent me away with my prescription.
I also happened to mention that I felt like I'd been gaining weight despite not really having changed anything about my diet or exercise.
What she said shocked me, but I wasn’t all that surprised.
She was silent for a few moments and I could see her brain whirring as she tried to come up with something useful to say.
She failed in her attempts.
All she could come up with was "maybe you could try eating a bit less."
I sat there stunned, nodded weakly, and left the surgery.
I don’t know why I continue to be amazed by how unhelpful some medical professionals can be (I say some, not all).
I knew that - for me - eating less wasn't an option. Dieting and restriction only ever backfired.
Most women over 40 that I speak to are trying to cobble together a way of eating from multiple different sources.
Maybe the GP has suggested you try eating less or put you on a low fat plan with zero context or support.
Maybe you've bought books on fasting, listened to some menopause wellness podcasts, or bought an expensive anti-bloat supplement you saw on Instagram during a late night doomscroll (no shame).
I'm going to hazard a guess that you're overwhelmed, trying everything and getting nowhere.
Meanwhile, the Dairy Milk continues to shout at you from 4pm onwards every day and you can't figure out how to shut it up.
This is exactly why I'm building something new for women in their 40s and 50s - something that will finally help quieten the food noise and escape the overwhelm.
