The Winback wins again 💙🐴

Helping this lovely girl through a little flare-up of osteoarthritis, with Winback TECAR therapy forming part of her plan to help manage swelling and discomfort.

Her treatment plan included:
💙 Winback TECAR therapy
🚶‍♀️ Hand walking, gradually increasing
🌿 Restricted turnout, slowly built back up
🥰 And a whole lot of love from her mummy!

Jango had a little road trip out today to see the lovely Fede! 🐴🩵

Today was all about his feet. Before having front shoes fitted, I wanted to get foot balance X-rays so we could see exactly what was going on internally and make sure we were making the right decisions for him.

The fabulous Grant Moon was there to assess Jango alongside his X-rays before shoeing him, so we could look at the whole picture rather than simply shoeing what we could see from the outside.

As a vet physio, I think getting the foot right for the individual horse is SO important. We often start looking closely at foot balance after a horse has become lame or sustained an injury — but why wait until there’s a problem?

For me, this is just as much about injury prevention, soundness and long-term performance as it is about treating an existing issue.

A really interesting day and hopefully another piece of the puzzle in keeping Jango feeling his best. 🧩🐴

And just a note on that last picture… he’s not sedated, he really is just THAT chill! 😂😴 Apparently a trip to the vets is exhausting work!

Sanka’s owner has put so much work into his rehabilitation, and it was wonderful to see how much more comfortable and confident he was on his follow-up visit.

When I first met him, he was reluctant to trot and was clearly uncomfortable. Since then, his owner has worked incredibly hard to follow his exercise programme consistently, and the difference is already starting to show.

You can clearly see from the video just how much he enjoyed his physiotherapy session. He’s brighter, happier and much more willing to move forwards.

We’re not at the finish line yet, but rehabilitation isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency, patience and celebrating every small step in the right direction.

Could Winback help your horse with osteoarthritis? 🐴

Osteoarthritis isn’t simply a case of “wear and tear”. It often affects the way a horse moves, loads its limbs and uses its muscles.

As part of a rehabilitation programme, I use Winback therapy to help:

✓ Improve circulation

✓ Reduce muscle tension

✓ Encourage movement

✓ Support strength and rehabilitation work

But it isn’t a magic fix.

The best results come from combining physiotherapy with appropriate veterinary care, exercise prescription, management changes and a long-term plan tailored to the individual horse.

Three things I look for in a performance horse 🐴
1️⃣ Willingness to move forwards
2️⃣ Muscle coverage and symmetry
3️⃣ Foot mechanics
These areas can give us valuable insight into how a horse is moving, coping with its workload and performing.
Regularly assessing and managing changes in these areas can help identify potential issues early, guide training and rehabilitation, and reduce the risk of injury.
Looking after the whole horse is key to supporting long-term soundness and performance.

Could your horse have HOCK osteoarthritis? 👀

These are three of the most common signs we see in horses with hock osteoarthritis:

➡️ Struggling to transition into canter
➡️ Dragging the hind toes
➡️ Losing impulsion and not wanting to push forwards

These signs can be early indicators, but they don’t automatically mean your horse has hock osteoarthritis. Many other conditions, including stifle, suspensory, sacroiliac and back problems, can present in a similar way.

A diagnosis of hock osteoarthritis should always be made following a thorough veterinary lameness examination. This may include flexion tests, diagnostic nerve or joint blocks, and imaging such as radiographs (X-rays) to identify the source of pain and confirm the diagnosis.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs in your horse, don’t ignore them. Early assessment can help identify the underlying problem and get the right treatment and rehabilitation plan in place.
