If you answered "I'll do it later this week" but know there's a good chance you'd actually start it the day before it's due, you're not alone.

For many people with ADHD, it's not about being lazy, unmotivated, or disorganised. The ADHD brain often struggles to prioritise tasks that don't feel urgent, even when they're important. Without a clear deadline or immediate consequence, the task can remain stuck in the "I'll do it later" category.

Then something changes.

The deadline gets closer, the urgency kicks in, and suddenly there's enough stimulation for the brain to engage. What looked like procrastination from the outside was actually a difficulty with task initiation and executive functioning.
Ironically, if the same task had come with a deadline of "today", it may well have been completed quickly and to a high standard.

This is one of the reasons ADHD can be so misunderstood.

It's not a lack of ability. It's often a difference in how the brain processes motivation, urgency, and reward.

Does this sound familiar? Let us know in the comments – when would you do the task?

“Perimenopause didn’t create my ADHD – it exposed it.”
Many women are diagnosed with ADHD in their 40s and 50s, not because the condition suddenly appears, but because the hormonal changes of perimenopause can make existing symptoms much more noticeable. As oestrogen levels fluctuate and decline, difficulties with focus, memory, organisation, emotional regulation, and mental overwhelm can intensify. For years, many women have unknowingly developed coping strategies that mask their ADHD symptoms, but during perimenopause these strategies may no longer work as effectively. This often leads women to seek answers for challenges they’ve experienced throughout their lives, resulting in a long-overdue ADHD diagnosis.

If you are looking for help with getting a diagnosis or you have a diagnosis but need support then get in touch with us at the ADHD Treatment Centre, our team of professionals are here to support you every step of the way on your ADHD journey.

Nutrition can play a role in regulating ADHD symptoms like distractibility, inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity by influencing brain function through nutrient levels, particularly micronutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, and B vitamins, where deficiencies can potentially exacerbate ADHD symptoms; a balanced diet with whole foods, limiting processed foods and added sugars, and maintaining consistent meal times can help manage blood sugar levels and support better cognitive function in individuals with ADHD. We've highlighted some of the foods to avoid and the right foods to eat.
Foods to avoid
• High-sugar foods: Can cause blood sugar fluctuations that affect mood and focus.
• Caffeine: Can disrupt sleep patterns.
• High-sodium foods: Can lead to dehydration, which can affect attention and memory.
• Fried foods: Can contribute to inflammation, which can impact cognitive functioning.
• Processed foods: Lack essential nutrients and can contribute to poor concentration.
• Artificial additives: Can exacerbate ADHD symptoms in some individuals.
Foods to eat
• Fruits and vegetables: A study found that children who ate more fruits and vegetables had less severe inattention symptoms.
• Whole grains: Provide nutrients for brain function.
• Lean proteins: Provide nutrients for brain function.
• Healthy fats: Omega-3 fatty acids are a healthy fat.
• Iron: Helps make dopamine.
• Zinc: Regulates dopamine and may improve the brain's response to it.

This perspective sees ADHD as a brain that is wired differently, often creative, energetic, and passionate, rather than lacking. It highlights ADHD as an intense focus on many things at once, rather than an inability to focus.
