Good morning

ADHD and Friction: What’s Getting in the Way of Starting?

Have you ever had something you really wanted to do, knew how to do, and even had time to do… but somehow just couldn’t get started?

You’re not alone!

For adults with ADHD, getting started can sometimes feel like pushing against an invisible barrier.

It’s not necessarily about laziness, lack of motivation or not caring enough. Sometimes, there are barriers between our intentions and taking action.

In my latest podcast episode, I’m exploring what might get in the way of starting — and how understanding these barriers can help us find practical strategies that work for us.

As a CBT therapist and Executive Function Coach, I believe that understanding ourselves better is a powerful starting point for change.

Instead of asking yourself, “Why can’t I just get on with it?” try asking:

What would make getting started easier for me?

I’ve put the link in the comments if you would like to have a listen.

🎙️Good Morning, My first Confident ADHD Podshot is LIVE!

Today I’m talking about away-from goals and towards goals — and why it can be helpful to think about what we’re actually moving towards, rather than just what we’re trying to get away from.

This is the kind of thing I want to explore in the podcast: practical ideas around ADHD, CBT, executive functioning and everyday life that hopefully make things make a little more sense.

If you enjoy it, please follow the podcast so you don't miss the next one.

And I’d love your help too — what ADHD topics would you like me to talk about?

Thanks for listening and have a good day. Deirdre

It could be anything from procrastination and motivation to emotions, relationships, work, overwhelm, confidence… whatever you're curious about.

Hello there,

One of the things I notice with ADHD is that it’s not always about knowing what needs to be done.

Sometimes it’s knowing where to start when everything feels important.

You can have a list in front of you, know exactly what you should be doing, and still feel completely overwhelmed.

That’s where I think the idea of friction is really useful.

Is the task too big?
Too vague?
Boring?
Are there too many distractions?
Or have you simply run out of mental energy?

Sometimes the answer isn’t to try harder.

It’s to make the first step easier.

I’m exploring this more through my work around ADHD, CBT and executive functioning.

Hope this is helpful.

Good morning

I know what I need to do. So why can’t I just do it?

Have you ever thought this?

You know you need to make the appointment.

You know you need to send the email.

You know you need to start the task.

You might even have a list.

You might have planned it perfectly.

And yet… you still don’t do it.

Then comes the frustration.

Why am I like this?

Why can’t I just get on with it?

Am I lazy?

This is one of the things I want to explore with Making Sense of ADHD.

Because ADHD isn’t simply about knowing what to do.

There’s often a whole pattern happening between knowing and doing.

I’m going to be talking much more about that over the next couple of weeks.

And I’m building something practical to help with it. ❤️
