Once again , let’s talk about corns. 🤓 This week I’ve been seeing a fair amount of clients with corns on their toes.
I cannot stress the importance of footcare enough. Corns are just one of the MANY reasons why we should take it seriously! 🦶❣️
Some corns are noticeably painful when they develop while others go undetected and only get painful once they have already become a bigger problem and also pose risks to our overall health.
Let’s ‘dig deeper’ (because this is exactly what we do as foot health professionals when we detect a corn 🧐😁).
In general, corns develop due to localized pressure and friction. In particular, corns around our toes are usually caused by factors such as:
👉Thickened Nails
Conditions like fungal infections or psoriasis can cause nails to thicken, leading to increased pressure against the nail bed and resulting in corns forming underneath the nail (as seen in picture).
👉Improper Footwear
Tight-fitting shoes can contribute to pressure and friction on the toes, promoting corn formation. Very often corns form on the tip of the toe which is also called the apex (as seen in picture).
👉Biomechanical Issues
Abnormal walking patterns or foot structure may also lead to uneven pressure distribution, causing corns to develop not only around the toes but also all over the feet.
⁉️ What are the possible health risks corns can lead to?
From a foot health and a health perspective over all, corns can pose several risks:
👉Not only can corns cause pain and discomfort, they can also impact our mobility and lead to bigger problems impacting other body parts.
‼️ Infection (cannot stress this one enough ) ‼️
If a corn becomes inflamed or if there are cracks in the skin, there is a risk of bacterial or fungal infections. This can become an increasing health risk for people with diabetes.
👉In individuals with diabetes or vascular diseases, the presence of corns can complicate foot care, increasing the risk of ulcers or further complications.
It's SO important to consult a healthcare professional for accurate diagnosis and potential treatment options if you experience issues with corns on your feet.
