A trip to London last night for the launch of Get Ahead of Being Dead, the latest book from the brilliant Evie King Evie King

Many of you will know Evie as the author of Ashes to Admin, and what makes her work so utterly brilliant is that it comes from real-life experience. Through her role as a council funeral officer, she’s seen first-hand the situations that so many of us assume will never happen to us or our people. The reality is that life doesn’t always go to plan, and Evie is passionate about helping people get organised and have the conversations - she sees the admin and emotional chaos when there are none.

I had the pleasure of having Evie on the Dying for a Cuppa podcast (and our conversation was so good that we’ve agreed we def need a part two) She’s a font of knowledge, hilarious, refreshingly honest, and a pocket rocket of a human.

It was lovely to finally meet her in person, celebrate the launch of her new book, and spend time with friends and colleagues from across the end-of-life world. Some were familiar faces, others people I’ve only ever known through social media, but every one of them shares a passion for improving conversations around death, dying and planning ahead. Definitely my kind of people.

Congratulations, Evie. Here’s to another brilliant book and the countless people it will help 🥂🙌🏼

A recent personal bedside share from me ❤️

I am writing this while I sit at the bedside of a dying soul. Their family have allowed me to share my experience in this moment and can see me on my phone as I type. Modern day Soul Midwifery - bedside vigil whilst journaling in the notes section on my phone.

The person dying is calm and peaceful and we have music on in the back ground. Their face is relaxed, breathing shallow but steady for now. The gaps between their breaths is slowly getting longer. Their body settled and restful. They are comfy with all their pillows and blankets, tucked up cosy and safe as they always liked to be.

I sneeze and they flinch as if I’ve disturbed the process, I go still like statue fearing I’ve annoyed or unsettled them, but they soon settle and the family and I laugh.

Every now and again they reach out and I reassure them they are safe, loved, and hold their hand. We moisten their mouth and lips just a little and add some lip balm. Brush their hair away from their face. Softly and gently touch their hands with cream which smells of apples and cinnamon. A spritz of their favourite fragrance in their top.

The curtains are drawn, a dim light in the room, and the window open. The usual noises around them of home carry on like any other day. Even a hoover at one point. Everyone is aware and gentling moving about in this unfamiliar yet strangely very familiar space. Kettle boiling on repeat with snacks all about the kitchen.

This soul and body are subtly shifting as we simply sit and witness and honour the transition. The labour of dying playing out in front of our eyes. Nowhere to be and nothing to do. There is joy, tears, laughter and silence and it all feels very honest. Very real.

I’ll be leaving soon and will not likely see this person again. And that’s ok. It is not my transition to witness. They know what they are doing and how it’s going to go. And it’s all about them. We’ve all got their back. And I know that’s what they can feel ❤️

What a lovely morning spent at Buckinghamshire New University yesterday, speaking with nursing students from the College of Health and Society about my work as a Soul Midwife and, perhaps more importantly, about the humanness of death and dying.

I was invited to explore spirituality, connection, and the deeply human experiences that sit alongside the clinical aspects of end-of-life care. Conversations like these are so important because whilst knowledge, skills and clinical expertise are vital, so too is our ability to sit with people, listen, connect and simply be present.

I was so excited to know that these students have a dedicated end-of-life care module as part of their nursing studies. What a fantastic opportunity to encourage future nurses to think about death and dying from different perspectives, to challenge assumptions, and to explore not only how they will care for others professionally, but also how these experiences may impact them personally.

Death and dying belongs to all of us. The more we can create spaces for open, honest and thoughtful conversations, the better equipped we are to support people at one of the most significant times of their lives.

A huge thank you to the university, staff and students for such a warm welcome and for being so open, engaged and willing to explore these conversations 🙏🏼❤️

You do not need to work in healthcare to benefit from understanding death and dying better.

In fact, some of the most powerful conversations during my masterclasses come from: people supporting ageing parents, partners caring for loved ones, people navigating grief, people curious about end-of-life care,
and people who simply want to feel less frightened of the subject altogether.

Because at some point in life, most of us will sit beside somebody we love and wonder:
“What do I do?”
“What do I say?”
“Is this normal?”
“How can I help?”

And the reality is, most people have never been given the space to ask those questions openly.

The Dying for a Cuppa® Masterclass is not about doom and gloom. It is about confidence, compassion, understanding, communication, and human connection.

It might not be what you think, it will be so much more ☕️❤️

Such a great day yesterday at the National Funeral Exhibition.

So many valuable conversations, so much learning, and such an important opportunity to network and connect with so many different businesses and people across the funeral industry. Days like that are always such a reminder of just how much innovation, passion and education exists within this world.

For me, what I always take away the most is the people.

It was brilliant to catch up with so many friends and colleagues, old and new, and to finally meet some people properly in real life after only ever connecting online. But so much talking did mean hardly any photos 😂 and also I never made it to see every stand 🙈

A really positive, inspiring and genuinely lovely day all round ❤️

Hi folks 👋🏼 Feels like I haven’t shown my face for a while so hello!

This is tired, unfiltered me, right now, on Thursday night reflecting on the week I have had so far. Here are some snippets of my world and work since Monday…

☕️ Meeting with 2 families to plan their persons funerals. One of the families is friends with my family, what a small world!

☕️ Conducted a farewell service where I nearly lost it seeing a 92 yr old cry for the spouse of over 70 years (I cried as soon as I got in the car)

☕️ Spent time alongside a soul with dementia who was so sleepy but wouldn’t let go of my hand.

☕️ Talked about supporting people whose partners have a particular illness and the impact of the loss of connection and intimacy - secondary losses

☕️ Debriefed with a large care company about the training I delivered last week and how incredible the feedback was. All attendees were very touched personally as well as supported professionally

☕️ Recored 3 podcast episodes, 2 for the new season of Dying for a Cuppa®️ and one I was interviewed for.

☕️ Topics of conversations this week included racism, psychic mediums, spirit dolls, embalming and African Caribbean funerals.

And there’s more…

No 2 days are the same in my world, and as tiring as it is, I wouldn’t change it for the world ❤️

Now roll on tomorrow where I have a day filled with all things funerals at the National Funeral Exhibition 🤩
