What are the songs you play when you are feeling sad or unwell?
Music can be a great source of comfort if chosen well, but it varies a great deal between people. It’s also very important to get the volume right.
For those who have a strong faith, there may be familiar songs linked to worship which may offer peace and relief in difficult times.
Using earphones and personalised playlists can work well, and why not involve families and friends too?

“Over four years… across four distinctly different homes, I have experienced on a regular basis the magic that happens when you can provide a song, a beat and a bit of banter..”
George Williams, musician in residence in Southern Healthcare homes in accompanied by his dog Dotty, can really personalise sessions based on his detailed knowledge of people living and working in the homes.
He is able to improvise, including suggestions and contributions from people in the moment and in different places – in the lounge, in people’s own rooms and in the garden.

‘Ah, my nan’s care home had live music – she loved it!’ ‘Music always brought dad out of himself.’ ‘That must be a really rewarding job.’ These...

Small things can have a big impact on a person living with dementia.
Noise, bright lights, busy environments, confusion, or feeling rushed can all cause distress and anxiety.
At CareBright, we focus on creating calm, supportive environments where people feel safe, comfortable, and understood 💙
Sometimes the smallest changes — a quieter space, a reassuring voice, or a familiar activity — can make the biggest difference.

Think out of the box with the range of music you use
It’s easy to get stuck on the great classics like Elvis, Abba or Andrea Bocelli.
But think about different fun music from round the world such as the Indian ‘Jai Ho’, the Korean ‘Gangnam Style’, Latin American dances etc. The choices are endless.
Don’t forget popular classics from the musicals or those which are linked with particular places – ‘O Canada,’ ‘Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner’, ‘Danny Boy’ or ‘Down Under’
