It's that time of year again when I need to undertake my refresher training as all care workers are expected to do so annually.
For starters, this evening I have completed my Food Hygiene Refresher training. Over the next two weeks I will also complete:
Health and Safety
Infection Control
Safeguarding of vulnerable adults
Dementia care
Diabetes
First aid awareness
Moving and handling
Pressure care
Safe Medicine administration

I have completed them all numerous times before but information and procedures can and do change so it's important not to become complacent and stay up to date!!

Reassuring to have had both vaccinations now, along with most of my clients. I look forward to the easing of lockdown, and being able to get them out and about again and hopefully enjoying some springtime sunshine!
Life is good when you share it with good people!!

So after many worrying months, and spending the last couple of weeks busily getting my elderly clients to their Covid vaccination appointments, we are finally in a situation where both they and now I have finally all been vaccinated. Obviously it's important to continue maintaining safety procedures, but it certainly brings a little peace of mind in these difficult times.

It's lovely to be working with all my lovely clients again as their isolation periods come to an end.
I am beyond happy to be spending time with everyone again, seeing everybody well, enjoying their company and helping them to deal with and adapt to any lifestyle changes necessary as a result of our new 'normal'.

It's been a challenging time in many ways but one of the upsides for me has been getting to know some of my local residents who were managing to maintain independence prior to lockdown, but suddenly found themselves in great need as the services they relied on were suddenly no longer available. It's been personally very satisfying to be able to step up and help out in their hours of need.

So to my regular clients and my new, I hope we all keep safe and well and, as the country unlocks I look forward to spending time with you all and embracing the weeks and months ahead xx

So I thought I should post an update on here as there appears to be an influx of people looking at my page.
I have now cancelled all my non-essential work and have only a handful of people that I am seeing, those who need meds and shopping, and personal care where no other assistance is available, naturally following social distancing guidelines as much as possible.
Sadly I do not qualify for the Government's self - employed financial help scheme, although I still feel I have a moral duty to be working.
I have today been introduced to a local elderly lady with is alone and obviously in need of help, so have offered to assist her at no cost. This is something we should all be doing, assisting the vulnerable, helping our community in these difficult and testing times.

To that end I am making myself available to those living amongst us who are confused and vulnerable to help them in whatever way is needed. It's a difficult balancing act as I still have my own family to go home to and protect, but if you know of anyone in need who I may be able to help then please pm me and I will do my best to help!

Putting a smile on my clients face has always been the most rewarding part of care work for me, knowing that my input has made somebody's day just that bit better. With that in mind this week I will be taking a lovely lady into St. Ives to join their new dementia choir, as singing has always been a positive part of her life. Find below details of the group. The more the merrier!!!!

This is just so true.

For many elderly people boredom can be a huge problem and often the cause of depression. Taking someone out for just an hour or two can drastically improve quality of life and have a huge positive effect on mental wellbeing. This is Colin's mum (not a client! 😊). We make sure she gets out of her care home at least twice a week for coffee and a tasty treat.
This is a service I also provide regularly for several of my customers and something I enjoy immensely. Often speaking to someone in a different environment brings out a whole other side to their character and often stirs memories of days gone by. It also gives them something to both remember when speaking to family and friends, and something to look forwards to when their days are quiet.
To me it is always a pleasure and never feels like work, to them the mental and physical benefits are endless. Perfect all round!!

Feeling really positive! A month ago I made the decision to become self employed having spent years working for care companies both large and small, often feeling the frustrations of working within an under funded and poorly staffed, profit driven care system.
It has already proven to be absolutely the right decision as I now have a handful of clients to whom I can offer a more close and personal working relationship, having the time to properly get to know them and understand their needs and making long term friends along the way. Making a positive difference to both their lives and mine. The very best start possible!!

Ready for another day doing the job I love!
In my book a successful care call is one where all needs have been met but more importantly your clients smile is larger when you leave than when you arrive. Its all about making somebody's day better!! That's what makes me smile!!
