What a wonderful way to start the new academic year by sharing a new piece of research: a randomised controlled trial by Chen et al. (2025) exploring the effectiveness of Bowen Therapy for fibromyalgia.

The objective was to determine whether Bowen therapy can help alleviate pain, enhance functional capacity, reduce sleep and mood disturbances, and improve overall quality of life.

The study followed 78 participants split into two groups: one receiving eight sessions of Bowen therapy over 12 weeks alongside conventional care, and a control group continuing conventional care alone.

Positive Highlights & Percentage Changes
Lower Limb Endurance: An approximate 66.7% increase in successful stands from a baseline mean of 6 to 10 post-treatment, with benefits sustained for 12 weeks.

Dominant Arm Endurance: An approximate 54.5% increase in successful arm curls from a baseline mean of 11 to 17 post-treatment.

Non-Dominant Arm Endurance: An approximate 40.0% increase in successful curls from a baseline mean of 10 to 14 post-treatment.

Reduced Activity Interference: An approximate 17.5% reduction on the Brief Pain Inventory interference scale, dropping from a baseline mean of 5.7 to 4.7.

Mental Health-Related Quality of Life: An approximate 15.9% improvement in SF-36 Mental Component Summary scores, rising from a baseline mean of 33.3 to 38.6.

Safety: No serious adverse events or safety concerns were reported.

It is encouraging to see greater insight into how bodywork supports those navigating chronic conditions. We would love to hear from you if this was relevant for you.

Could a gentler approach help you take back control from migraines?

If you live with migraines, you know they're about far more than "just a headache." They can disrupt work, family life, sleep and the simple pleasure of enjoying your day.

A national migraine study found that nearly 80% of participants reported fewer or less severe migraines after receiving Bowen Therapy.
(Source: Nikke Ariff, National Migraine Research Programme, 2002.)

Rather than forcing the body to change, Bowen Therapy works by encouraging the nervous system to move into a calmer, more restorative state.

This may help to:
✔ Ease stress and muscular tension
✔ Reduce tightness in the neck, shoulders and jaw
✔ Support better sleep and relaxation
✔ Encourage the body's natural ability to regulate itself

Every migraine experience is unique, but for many people, supporting the body as a whole can be an important part of managing symptoms.

If migraines are affecting your quality of life, it may be worth exploring a different approach.

The body is like a garden.

It doesn’t need to be forced to grow — it needs the right conditions.

Bowen Therapy offers gentle input and space for the body to respond in its own way.

Small signals. Quiet pauses. A chance to recalibrate.

I took this pic at Buckham Fair at the weekend.
The rider is Ben Atkinson. Check him out if you love horses or ride. I don’t or more truly can’t 😂 but I was completely bowled over by his true gift with the horses.

Watching one man totally in control of 10 horses without reins or restraint was just mind blowing.

Bowen is a wonderful reset for us humans but Equine Bowen is phenomenal for the horses too. Just imagine a ride where you are totally aligned with your horse. 🐎 🥰

Your nervous system is constantly doing three things:

✨ Receiving input
✨ Processing information
✨ Generating response

Most of this happens automatically, without conscious awareness.

This is why pauses are included between moves — to allow time for observation of change and system response.

It’s less about what is done in a moment, and more about what your system does with it.
