How Fluid Buildup Creates Fibrosis
When you have surgery or experience an injury, your body’s natural response is to send fluid to the area to help it heal. However, if that fluid gets trapped and sits there for too long, it can completely change how your body repairs itself
Here is exactly how stagnant fluid turns into bumpy, firm tissue:
💧 Step 1: The Fluid Gets Trapped
After surgery, your local lymphatic "drains" are temporarily disrupted, causing excess fluid to pool in the tissue. Instead of moving along smoothly, this fluid becomes trapped and stagnant—almost like a blocked pipe.
🧬 Step 2: The Cells Get Stressed
Imagine your tissue cells living happily under normal conditions. When a large pocket of fluid gets stuck on top of them, it creates constant, heavy pressure. Because of this buildup, the cells are starved of fresh oxygen and become highly stressed. This stress sends out a panic signal that activates "builder" cells called fibroblasts.
🕸️ Step 3: Overproduction of Collagen
Once these builder cells are switched on by the stress signals, they go into absolute overdrive. They start rapidly producing collagen (the material your body uses to make scars). Because they are rushing in a panicked environment, they don't lay the collagen down in nice, neat parallel lines. Instead, they throw it down in a messy, disorganized, tangled web.
🩹 Step 4: The Tissue Hardens (Fibrosis)
As that dense, tangled web of collagen continues to stack up, it begins to thicken and harden under the skin. This thick, hardened area is what we call fibrosis. It can feel like hard lumps, thick bands, or generalized firmness, making the area feel tight and restricting your natural, comfortable movement.
How MLD Breaks the Cycle 🌸
Because fibrosis starts with trapped fluid, the absolute best way to prevent it—or soften it once it forms—is to get that fluid moving! Gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) acts like a manual pump, clearing the stagnant fluid out of the tissues so your cells can relax, get fresh oxygen, and heal smoothly.
