🐴☎️ WHO REMEMBERS BUYING HORSES BEFORE THE INTERNET?
🏴 AND IF YOU GREW UP IN SCOTLAND… WHO REMEMBERS THE LEGENDARY YELLOW PAPER? 😂
Before Facebook, HorseQuest, WhatsApp and endless videos, Scottish horse shopping often started with a copy of Scot-Ads / Ad Trader, affectionately known as “The Yellow Paper!”
Printed on that unmistakable cheap, bright yellow newsprint, it was practically essential reading for Scottish horse lovers!
And the best bit? THERE WERE USUALLY NO PHOTOGRAPHS AT ALL! 😂
Just a few lines of text, a telephone number and your imagination working overtime!
And who remembers the clever sellers who started every advert with the letter “A” just to get their horse listed at the top?
🐴 “A stunning 14.2hh pony…”
🐴 “A fantastic all-rounder…”
🐴 “A genuine schoolmaster…”
Apparently every horse in Scotland was called A SOMETHING! 😂
Horse buying in the 80s and 90s really was a completely different adventure!
Elsewhere, you might have been lucky enough to get a tiny, blurry photograph in Horse & Hound or another equestrian magazine.
Forget endless WhatsApp videos, competition records and professionally edited sales footage.
Back then, finding your next horse involved three essential ingredients:
🐴 A well-thumbed magazine or Yellow Paper.
☎️ A landline telephone.
🚗 And a willingness to drive halfway across the country based on a few carefully chosen words!
And OH, those descriptions! 😂
⭐ “100% bombproof” — until something moved!
⭐ “Not a novice ride” — which could mean absolutely anything!
⭐ “Forward-going” — hold on tight!
⭐ “Good to catch” — provided you had three hours and a bucket of feed!
⭐ “Loads well” — eventually!
And who remembers ringing the seller, getting no answer and having to wait until someone was home to find out whether your dream horse was still available?
No videos. No instant messages. No Google searches.
Just a few lines of text, a telephone number and a whole lot of optimism!
Sometimes you found the horse of a lifetime. ❤️
Other times… well, let’s just say the advert and the horse weren’t always quite the same thing! 😂
NOW WE WANT TO HEAR YOUR STORIES! 👇
🏆 What’s your BEST memory of buying a horse this way? Did you find your absolute horse of a lifetime?
🙈 And what’s your WORST? Did you drive for hours only to discover something completely different from the description?
🏴 And Scottish riders — who remembers sitting with The Yellow Paper, circling adverts and dreaming about which horse you might bring home?
We want the hilarious, the heartwarming and the downright unbelievable!
Share your stories in the comments! We’d love to feature some of our favourites (with your permission) at The EquiCan Academy.
Because although the way we buy horses has changed dramatically, finding the right horse has always been about knowing what to look for, asking the right questions and understanding the horse in front of you.
