☀️ SUMMER PIERCING AFTERCARE – READ BEFORE YOU SWIM! 🌊⚠️ This applies to ALL piercings – including ear lobes, cartilage, nose, navel, and body piercings.
With holidays, pools, hot tubs, and sea swims coming up, it’s so important to look after your piercings properly to avoid irritation or infection.
Here’s your clear, no-nonsense guide 👇
💧 CAN I SWIM WITH A FRESH PIERCING?Ideally, avoid swimming until your piercing is fully healed.
Pools = chlorine (can irritate)
Sea = bacteria + salt (not always clean!)
Hot tubs = HIGH infection risk
If you do go in the water, keep it brief and follow aftercare immediately.
🧼 AFTER SWIMMING CAREAs soon as you’re out:✔ Rinse with clean, fresh water✔ Clean with sterile saline solution✔ Pat dry with clean tissue (NOT towels – they hold bacteria)
🚫 AVOID THIS
Touching with dirty hands
Twisting or playing with jewellery
Using alcohol, peroxide, or harsh products
Removing jewellery too early
🔥 SIGNS OF IRRITATION OR INFECTIONWatch for:
Redness that spreads
Heat or throbbing
Swelling that worsens
Yellow/green discharge
Pain increasing instead of easing
⚠️ If this happens, don’t panic—but don’t ignore it either.
💡 WHAT TO DO IF YOU’RE AWAY OR AT HOME (UK)✔ Keep using sterile saline 2–3 times daily (travel-size is ideal)✔ You can make a gentle salt soak if needed (¼ tsp sea salt in warm boiled water, cooled)✔ Keep it clean, dry, and avoid unnecessary contact✔ Avoid swimming until it settles✔ Do NOT remove jewellery (this can trap infection)
🏥 WHEN TO SEEK HELP (UK OR ABROAD)
If swelling, pain, or discharge gets worse
If you feel unwell or develop a fever
If the area becomes very hot or starts spreading
👉 In the UK: contact your GP, pharmacist, or call NHS 111 for advice👉 Abroad: visit a local pharmacy or medical clinic—don’t wait if it’s worsening
✨ TOP SUMMER TIPIf you’re planning lots of swimming—WAIT before getting pierced or book it AFTER your holiday. Healing + water don’t mix well!
