🧭 What Makes Empatia Different

A rare blend of emotional and practical support. Coaching with clinical depth – sessions are delivered by a specialist dementia nurse with 20+ years of experience, not a generalist coach or volunteer. Not a β€˜one-size-fits-all’ approach – sessions are adapted to your situation, personality, and family dynamics. Whole-family support – support for the person supporting

and caring for a loved one, as well as the person living with dementia is hard to find. At Empatia we work with carers and the person living with dementia family together or separately depending on need. Psychologically informed – everything is based on solid psychological and dementia care models. Consistency – clients often struggle with fragmented services. Here, they get ongoing, trusted support from the same person.

🌱 What Empatia Improves in Peoples Lives

Reduces emotional overwhelm like guilt, grief, stress, and carer burnout

Helps families stay at home together for longer by avoiding crises (like sudden hospitalisation or emergency care moves)

Strengthens identity and connection – for both the person caring and supporting a loved one living with dementia

Improves day-to-day coping, especially around communication and behaviour changes

Helps the family make sense of the condition, not just manage it

Creates space to plan ahead with clarity instead of reacting in crisis

πŸ“’What you can expect

Clarity when you feel lost

A plan when things feel unpredictable

A calmer, more connected home life

It can prevent bigger costs later, like early care home admission, lost work days, or breakdown of relationships. Free services are often time-limited or reactive β€” Empatia offers depth, consistency, and a real relationship that grows with you.

What an incredible morning at The Roebuck Pub in Market Harborough with Leicester Musical Memory Box.

Kyle really knows how to elicit happiness in people living with dementia, their families and people living with other conditions. Musical Memory Box brings so many people together and I had such a great time.

Thank you, Kyle, the amazing volunteers, and the Roebuck pub!

When science eliminates a cancer. And what it tells us about dementia.

This week, a landmark study in The Lancet delivered one of modern medicine's most remarkable headlines: between 2020 and 2024, not a single young woman aged 20 to 24 in England died from cervical cancer.

Not fewer. Not almost none. Zero.

Before the HPV programme began in 2008, around 23 deaths would have been expected over that five-year period. The study estimates the programme has prevented nearly 200 deaths in England so far. Women vaccinated at 12 or 13 now have close to zero risk of dying from cervical cancer before 30.

This is what happens when science is trusted and a programme is delivered consistently over decades.

So what does this mean for dementia?

Lecanemab and donanemab are the first licensed disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer's disease in the UK. Clinical trials showed lecanemab slowed cognitive decline by 27%, and donanemab by 36%, compared to placebo. These drugs are imperfect, expensive, and work only in early-stage disease. But they are the beginning of something.

The HPV vaccine took 16 years before we reached zero. Dementia research is at its equivalent early chapter. Over 130 Alzheimer's drugs are in clinical trials right now.

The science is not finished. It is barely started.

I'm incredibly grateful to receive this wonderful feedback from Dementia Harborough πŸ’š

The courses I provide for people supporting a loved one living with dementia are effective because I combine advanced dementia education with therapeutic discussion, bringing together people who are treading a similar path.

The modules improve understanding of the condition and its impact on all areas of life. They empower people, provide a safe space where people feel understood, and help them to plan ahead and feel more in control.

It has been a privilege to work with Dementia Harborough, getting to know their members and being welcomed into such a supportive, dynamic, and person-centred community.

Thank you for your kind words and for placing your trust in me. I look forward to continuing to work together and supporting more people and families in the future.

🌟 What a fantastic start to our online dementia support course today! 🌟

Today we explored two topics that can completely change the way we understand and respond to dementia.

🧠 Understanding the neuroscience of dementia

We looked beyond the myths and misconceptions to understand how different memory systems are affected by dementia.

For example:

❓ "Why can my loved one remember the argument we had yesterday but not the note I left on the kitchen table?"

This often relates to different memory systems in the brain. Episodic memory (remembering recent events and new information) is commonly affected early in dementia, whilst autobiographical memory (memories linked to personal experiences and emotions) can remain stronger for much longer.

We also discussed why some people may still be able to carry out well-practised activities, such as driving familiar routes, making a cup of tea, or playing an instrument. These skills are often supported by procedural memory, which can remain relatively preserved despite other cognitive changes.

Understanding the brain helps us move away from assumptions such as "they're not trying" or "they're being difficult" and towards greater compassion, confidence and connection.

πŸ’™ Exploring guilt

We then had an honest discussion about guilt – one of the most common emotions experienced by people supporting someone living with dementia.

We explored:

β–ͺ️ Why guilt develops
β–ͺ️ The unrealistic expectations many people place on themselves
β–ͺ️ How guilt can affect wellbeing, decision-making and relationships
β–ͺ️ The difference between healthy reflection and unhelpful self-blame
β–ͺ️ How to take a more balanced and compassionate view of ourselves

Many people are carrying far more responsibility than they ever imagined, often whilst juggling work, family, finances and their own health. Guilt rarely makes us better supporters but, understanding it can help us care more effectively and sustainably.

Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to such thoughtful discussions. I am already looking forward to next week's session.

πŸ“’ Both of our current dementia support courses are now fully booked.

The response has been incredible, highlighting just how much need there is for evidence-based education, emotional support and a safe space to talk openly about the realities of supporting someone living with dementia.

If you would be interested in joining a future course, please get in touch. I'd be happy to add you to the waiting list and keep you updated about upcoming dates.
