Does it drive you crazy? 🫠 Yes!

But does it serve a very helpful purpose? Also yes 🙌

Every parent has that one book they could recite entirely from memory 😅

What is your child's go-to at the moment?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! It is an honour working with the amazing families that I do, and your positive feedback really means so much to me 🤗

I don't want to sound full of myself, but I am so proud to have created something that has helped children to develop and grow their communication skills. 🩷

1 - We have to create the kind of society we want to live in. What does it say about us that children are struggling to access the minimum level of support they need?

2 - Parents and carers of SEN children are doing it all. Educating themselves about their child’s needs, learning how to support them through sensory diets, regulating activities and experiences, administering medications, monitoring their response to medications to made the necessary adaptations, advocating for their children, taking them to their appointments, often home schooling, learning new ways to communicate, how to fold a wheelchair into the boot of the car etc etc. The list is endless and it doesn’t stop.

If these parents and carers are pushed to breaking point because they now also need to become lawyers to get even a basic level of support for their children, who is going to pick up the slack? It would be much, much cheaper to support these parents BEFORE they reach crisis point.

3 - There are so many problems in the world like climate change and we need people who can ‘think outside of the box’ to help us solve them. Maybe someone who can focus on one tiny detail to an extraordinary level will be the person who invents the machine that can clean up the ocean? Who knows? But it would be a crying shame if that person never got the education they needed because we can’t fund some adaptations and access to specialists when required.

4- Yup, I said it. It’s the right thing to do. I’m not, for a second, advocating that we aren’t careful with public funds but let’s be honest. Parents and carers of children with SEN aren’t asking for hydrotherapy pools to be built in their gardens or live in Nanny’s. They’re asking to see a Speech and Language Therapist once in a while or to be in a school that’s able to meet their needs.

POV: you're a Speech & Language Therapist who regularly reassures families that they don't need to worry about everything they see on social media.

And I hope it's really clear, I'm not trying to suggest that it would be absolutely terrible if my child had a diagnosis of any of the things I've mentioned, I'm trying to highlight how looking at a list alone reduces the complexities of us human beings and I could therefore have arrived at numerous diagnoses which would be inaccurate.
