Today I was made a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers; the oldest optical body in the world. The Company was founded in 1629 and represents the breadth of the optical profession. It was a really interesting ceremony to hear all about the origins of the Company and its evolving role within the sector as well as the significance of the Declaration I had to give (the wording is the original from nearly 400 years ago!) I'm very proud to have been accepted and it was a great excuse for a lovely family trip to London! πŸ€“

The Leicester School of Optometry is open for business!! πŸ€“πŸ‘“

It's not strictly my practice, but it will explain why things have been a little quiet with the practice lately...!

After a lot of hard work, the new Optometry course has been granted provisional approval by the General Optical Council to take students in September and we celebrated by having an official opening of the clinical teaching space!

It's a really surreal moment to look around and see real clinical teaching spaces with amazing new equipment in, when it's all existed in my head for so long! The extremely kind comments from those who attended really were the icing on the cake! As much as I pride myself in quality eyecare, I want to ensure high quality teaching too. The teaching eyepieces on all of the microscopes are something I've been determined to have since I started, and I'm so pleased to have stuck with that! They look great!

I feel incredibly grateful to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic team of lecturers working with me and it's extremely exciting to think what is coming in the near future!!

But rest assured; it's business as usual for the practice as well!! Some exciting news from there coming soon too...!! πŸ€“πŸ§πŸ˜‰

Back from a great weekend away - not quite a holiday as I didn't make it further than the airport, but at least it was sunny! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ž

It was actually a 2-day course on managing strabismus and amblyopia (squint and lazy eye) in adults and children sponsored by Eye Hero Vision Training and presented by the great Dr Jen Simonson, who flew over from the US to give us this course.

It has been an incredible few days and really helpful for supporting these patients (I count myself amongst them!) who unfortunately are largely left by the NHS beyond the age of 8 because "things can't change"...! 🧐

Thankfully with a range of vision therapy and a really structured approach, this is not necessarily the case.

Thanks for a very informative weekend Dr Simonson! πŸ€“πŸ˜

Vision is dynamic! πŸ€“

See how the disc appears to become 3D just by adding movement! We often think of vision being measured by letters on a chart but there is so much more to it, especially for those who are struggling with visual processing issues.

I've just taken delivery of one of the first of Institut Sehen's devices in the UK to help add more dynamic therapy for my patients, and as you would expect from German engineering, it's an amazing piece of kit!!

There's a lot of versatility in what we can work with and as you can see by the last clip, integration of visual-motor skills is a key component in this.

A great day with .bv.girl and (who had flown over from Germany to deliver some equipment) looking at cool vision therapy kit for the practice. It's always really nice catching up with fellow vision therapy optometrists and sharing ideas - it's what makes it such a fun specialism to work in. Now I just need to magically find room in the practice for more toys to play with...! πŸ™ˆπŸ€“

Colour vision tests 🌈

In 1875, following a serious train crash in Sweden which was deemed to be the result of the driver not seeing the signal colour correctly, the King of Sweden requested a formal test be developed to measure ability to see colour.

The result was the Holmgren Wool Test, where the patient was asked to find all wool samples which matched a reference skein shown by the clinician.

It has since been replaced by quicker and more sensitive tests but as you can see with these images, it still appears different with various colour vision defects.

A huge thank-you to for some great new branding photos for the practice! Amie was great at capturing the style of the practice and helping to showcase what my work is all about and all the weird kit that I use. Thanks also to my lovely models, including baby Rose - you were great!

I just need to be organised and sort out using them in regular social media updates now!! πŸ€“πŸ˜

A great morning talking to case managers and the team at in Birmingham about senses and brain injury. Really great hearing about music rehabilitation therapy from too!! 🎢🎼

And the telescope in their offices was pointing pretty much at my old halls of residence when I started studying Optometry! πŸ€“πŸ§

Heard about Primitive Reflexes in children and want to know more? Perhaps you work with children (optometrist, teacher, etc) or just want to understand your own a little better as they grow up?

I wanted to give a very gentle introduction into what primitive reflexes are, why they exist and how they can impact on development and learning - and I have been invited by the team at AmblyoPlay/EyeHero to give a talk on just that! I think it's a subject that should get far more coverage than it does, even beyond optometry - it's so fundamental!

The joining link and QR code are in the image and it's free to attend (for those needing CPD points, it's even got one of those to sweeten the deal!) - please note it is an 8am GMT start time for the international audience!

A very interesting day at the Royal Society of Medicine's Annual Squint Forum last week. This year was considering paediatric brain tumors and intermittent exotropia (occasionally outward turning eyes). Eye muscle surgery is rarely effective in these cases - it *almost* sounded like they were coming round to vision therapy being the answer...! πŸ˜‰πŸ€“πŸ˜πŸ§
