Plyometrics in falls prevention? Absolutely but probably not in the way you're imagining.

When we think about falls prevention, strength training rightly gets a lot of attention. But strength is only one piece of the puzzle.

From around our 40s, muscle strength begins to decline. However, muscle power (force Γ— speed) declines earlier and more rapidly than strength, making it a key determinant of mobility, balance and independence as we age.

If you catch your foot on a kerb or lose your balance, it's not just strength that matters. Its your ability to produce force quickly, absorb force and react fast enough to recover.

That's where power training comes in. For the right person, this may include appropriately prescribed low-level plyometric exercises alongside reactive balance training.

This doesn't mean box jumps for every older adult. It can be as simple as:
βœ”οΈ Fast sit-to-stands
βœ”οΈ Rapid step-ups
βœ”οΈ Quick heel raises
βœ”οΈ Step-and-stick drills
βœ”οΈ Low-level hopping or landing exercises where appropriate

Research suggests that muscle power is more closely related to physical function than strength alone, and systematic reviews have shown that power training can improve muscle power and functional performance more than traditional strength training in older adults.

The goal isn't to jump higher.
It's to react quicker, move with confidence and stay independent for longer.

⚠️ Clinical reasoning, individual assessment and appropriate progression are essential to ensure exercises are safe, effective and tailored to the person's goals and abilities.

πŸ’¬ Does your exercise programme include power training or plyometrics? If you're a clinician, are you prescribing them as part of your falls prevention programmes?

Sports massage isn't just for athletes.

Whether you're recovering from training, managing the physical demands of work, or simply feeling stiff and achy, sports massage can help reduce muscle tension, improve mobility and support recovery.

Where clinically appropriate, we will also incorporate myofascial cupping therapy. Using gentle suction, cupping lifts the soft tissues rather than compressing them, helping to improve tissue mobility and complement hands-on treatment. Be sure to book this option if you are interested.

The circular marks that sometimes appear are a normal response to suction and usually fade within a few days.

Every appointment is tailored to you, your symptoms and your goals.

A fantastic day had making connections and discussing key topics in the cross sector county forum.

Thank you 4theRegion and Stori Cymru for presenting a brilliant day. We had great pleasure in exhibiting what we have to offer at CydWella with discussions around supporting eachother as local businesses and working across sectors within our Carmarthenshire.

Thank you to all that spoke to us and took part in our interactive activities today on stand. It was wonderful to see such collaboration acorss the networks!

As part of the day we were asked why is Carmarthenshire the best place to live?
Showncase today by the strength in our community who are patriotic and proud, our fantastic local facilities and green countryside.

Our answer? Sian being a Mynyddygarreg girl herself she says look no further than the writings on the wall at Parc y Scarlets

As Ray always said... "WEST IS BEST." 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

PROUD PHYSIO MOMENT β€οΈπŸ’™πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Over the past year, I've had the privilege of working with Cerith following a suprascapular nerve injury that significantly affected his shoulder strength and draw.
For an elite para archer, rehabilitation isn't simply about becoming pain free. It's about restoring the strength, control, endurance and confidence needed to compete at the highest level.

Together, we've worked through the setbacks, rebuilding shoulder function and gradually returning to the demands of competitive archery. Throughout the process, Cerith's determination, resilience and commitment to his rehabilitation have been exceptional.

After working his way through the GB Para Pathway, Cerith was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2026 World Archery Para Series in NovΓ© MΔ›sto, Czech Republic, making his international debut in GB colours. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸΉ

This achievement is a reminder of what can be accomplished through patience, resilience and consistent hard work.
As a physiotherapist, there are few things more rewarding than seeing a client return to the sport they love and to do so on the international stage is something truly special.

Congratulations, Cerith. Thank you for trusting me to be part of your journey. I'm incredibly proud of everything you've achieved and can't wait to see where your archery journey takes you next.

Wishing you every success for the future. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

The roads get narrower, the views get better, and the client instructions become..

"Just give me a call when the sat nav takes you as far as it can." πŸ˜‚πŸŒ³

Wouldn't have it any other way.

No postcode is too rural. No lane is too narrow. No client is too far. πŸ’š
