Hosted by Varun Vidyarthi, who was a Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex UK, back in 1983. His academic contribution then was printed in the journal of WORLD DEVELOPMENT from Oxford. His wife Amla was a consultant to Schumacher's famous Intermediate Technology Development Group, London.

They both decided to change their focus from intellectual writings and seminars and instead work directly among the poorest segments in rural India, exploring practical aspects of self and community awareness. After three decades of intense engagement with people and sharing of the associated learning, they are now recognized as the pioneers of the self-help movement that has not only affected the lives of millions of women, but has also led to a change of perspectives of thousands of social development leaders in India and other parts of the world.

In a short presentation on Saturday, we will get a glimpse of the concept of self and community awareness that constitute the core principles of the Manavodaya movement, a global movement to tackle poverty, inequality, injustice and various imbalances in environment and society.
