In her first speech as an MSP, Morven-May MacCallum highlighted the long and difficult journey many people with chronic diseases face before receiving a diagnosis.

"We need to ensure that patients are listened to when they tell us they are ill. Because my story should never have been my story.
And there are people across Scotland today whose stories are still being written. And we have the power to change them." - Morven-May MacCallum

Thank you to Jennifer for sharing her deeply personal experience of Lyme disease.

It’s great to see awareness growing across Ireland with local councils helping to highlight Lyme disease awareness by joining in campaigns like

Her life today is one of physical pain and cognitive fog as if her brain 'is on fire'

LRC is encouraged that Morven May has been a dedicated campaigner for this work, helping to raise awareness of the need for greater understanding and improved knowledge of Lyme disease.

We are delighted to see her use her inaugural speech as an MSP to address this important issue!

🌟💚 Light Up for Lyme 2026 💚🌟

A huge thank you to Roscommon County Council for taking part on 23rd May - your support helps shine a light on Lyme disease and brings vital awareness to communities across the country.

Jennifer O'Beirne arranged for the lighting of the Covered Civic Space in Roscommon with support from Cllr. Liam Callaghan, An Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council and were joined by her parents John & Patricia; Paddy Joe Burke, Rossie 'Superfan' and community advocate (kindly supporting the light up by flying the Roscommon colours on the night); and, Dr. Martin Daly, TD for Roscommon-Galway in support of and Lyme Disease Awareness Month.

As we reach the end of we hope the conversations don’t end here - we ask all medical professionals to be ‘ON TARGET’ with Lyme disease - there’s not always a bullseye rash!

🎯 T - Tick bite or exposure
🎯 A - Aches and pains
🎯 R - Rash
🎯 G - Generalised, non specific symptoms
🎯 E - Every system
🎯 T - Treat

Medical professionals should consider this in their clinical assessments and ask themselves: “Could it be Lyme disease?”
