Saturday music event and workshop.
Spend an afternoon with three classically trained Indian musicians exploring these ideas through the lens of ancient Hindu musical texts.
Together we will begin to appreciate how the power of sound and music can support personal wellbeing, while also gently developing some basic literacy around the foundation and structure of classical Indian compositions.
The afternoon is shared in two parts
An interactive workshop offering practical understanding and lived experience:
• How does the Western solfege system (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do) correlate with the Indian sargam system (sa-re-ga-ma-pa-dha-ni-sa)?
• How are these notes connected with the chakras within our body?
• What is Nada Yoga, and how does chanting certain frequencies connect us with the Universe?
We will share practical exercises you can take away as part of your self-care and holistic wellbeing, supporting the journey of revealing our true selves. This will include chants from the Upanishads, beej mantras, and an exploration of the significance of Om.
We will also explore:
• How a composition is usually structured — and why
• What a raaga is
• The different rhythmic cycles (taal) being played
• The boundaries within which musicians improvise
• The importance of silence within music
These concepts will be demonstrated, and participants will have opportunities to practise recognising patterns. While this may feel like much to absorb in a single day, the intention is to leave with a sense of familiarity — something that gently opens the ear and heart when listening again in the future.
There is an option to enjoy a meal after the workshop and/or before the evening performance.
The Evening Concert
The second part of the day is an invitation to close your eyes and fully immerse yourself in an energising classical performance, following the traditional structure of alaap, jhod and jhala.
The recital will be improvised, as per classical tradition.
If you have any questions, please be in touch.
No previous experience is required — you are welcome to join for the whole offering or just part of the day.
And if you feel moved, please help us by sharing!
