✨How iodine may support fertility✨
Iodine is an essential nutrient used by the thyroid gland to produce the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones influence many aspects of reproductive health, including:
✨Regulation of menstrual cycles
✨Ovulation
✨Development of the uterine environment needed for implantation
✨Early fetal growth and brain development during pregnancy
When iodine intake is insufficient, thyroid hormone production can be impaired, potentially leading to menstrual irregularities, anovulation (lack of ovulation), reduced fertility, miscarriage risk, and pregnancy complications.
A Singapore preconception cohort study reported an association between iodine supplementation and a higher probability of conception per menstrual cycle (Ku,cw et al, 2022).
✨Recommended intake
For women planning pregnancy, recommend approximately 150 micrograms (µg) of iodine daily.
