Last night we went to see Annie at Hull Theatres Hull New Theatre!

We saw this show last time it toured and came to Hull a few years ago but I thought it was a better production this time round with an outstanding cast, fabulous singing and some amazing musical numbers. The sets and staging were great and it was an all round feel good show; we had a lovely night out.

The only difference was that this time we have a dog ourselves so I can appreciate a lot more how hard it was to train and have a real dog live on stage! Sandy looked just like mine, only he was a lot better trained and well behaved 🤣

I took my 12 year old and it was perfect for her, but I'd say it really is suitable for all ages. We saw the 7.30pm show and it finished at 9.50pm so not too late for a back to school week event.
Catch it in Hull until the 13th September!
There are also 2.30pm matinees on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
There's still good availability for midweek tickets and just a few weekend ones too. Book here -

And that's a wrap on the very long school summer holidays!!

As always, it's flown by in the blink of an eye. We've had some fantastic days out, we've also done a lot of free things and have been overwhelmed by how much has been going on across our fabulous region over the summer.

For those already back at school, starting pre-school or school and moving to new year groups - I hope it's gone well! For those going later this week - good luck.
I'm a little bit glad to be getting back to routine and normality but I'm also feeling sad that this sunny, fun summer has drawn to a close 💜

There's one last event for us this evening to conclude our summer, can you guess where we're going? Review will be on here in the morning!

Our last day out of the summer school holidays is done!!
We went to one of our favourites, Sewerby Hall and Gardens, to see the Iconic Bricks exhibition.
There are 17 Lego creations to find around the grounds and gardens. This years theme is Extinction and there lots of incredible sculptures to find, plus a good quiz to do on the way round.

We also really enjoyed a game of pitch and putt, exploring the house, looking around the zoo and a visit to the cafe (if you are an East Riding Leisure member like me you also get your 10% off in this cafe which I did not know until today! And I got a stamp for my coffee loyalty card, bonus).
We ended our day with a walk to the cliff edge and down onto the beach to make rock towers.

The exhibition runs to 13th September so there’s still time to see it, it's a great day out idea if you have teacher training days still this week, or a weekend day out 😊

UK holiday inspiration - the Lake District!
We've just had a week away in Keswick. It's really easy to drive to, it took 3 hours 10 minute from Hull, and it was a great base for exploring the area.

The scenery is stunning! The weather could have been kinder but we put on our boots and coats and had some great walks. Both my kids enjoyed it and really got into the map reading and mountain navigating.

We took their bikes too - Keswick also has a great park, including this pump track we spent ages on, and a long safe stretch of old railway line to cycle from the park which then criss-crosses the river.

Our dog has been living his best life and is not happy to be home!
If you like the outdoors, walking and exploring, this is a great family holiday location, not too far away 👍

Freedom Festival Hull starts today!! This year it runs from Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th September with four days of circus, street theatre, dance, music, installations and creative experiences for all ages.

This year’s theme is Peace, with more than 130 events and experiences from 32 companies representing nine countries. Many outdoor performances are free or free to book, making it a great chance to enjoy something different with the family.

Look out for playful family shows including Rhinos, Baby Brain, Lilliput and Kismat Walla, alongside acrobatics, bold outdoor performances and plenty to discover across the city centre.

There is a Freedom Festival Family Guide, with suggested schedules for visitors with a baby or children under five, find it on their website homepage here.

Visiting in previous years with children I find it a big help to plan a rough route beforehand so we can see all things we really fancy, but then stumbling across some surprise acts is also great fun. Enjoy!

The countdown is on for the return of Freedom Festival in 2026 and this year, it arrives with a powerful and timely theme: Peace. Known for transforming the city with bold performances, striking installations, and thought-provoking art, the festival is once again set to bring people together in cele...
