Mastitis is when your breast becomes swollen, hot and painful.

Mastitis usually only affects 1 breast, and symptoms often come on quickly. Symptoms can include:

* a swollen area on your breast that may feel hot and painful to touch – the area may become red but this can be harder to see if you have black or brown skin
a wedge-shaped breast lump or a hard area on your breast
* a burning pain in your breast that might be constant or only when you breastfeed
* ni**le discharge, which may be white or contain streaks of blood
* You may also get flu-like symptoms, such as aches, a high temperature (or feeling hot, cold or shivery) and tiredness.

See a GP if your symptoms do not get better 12 to 24 hours after treating it at home, or your symptoms do not get better 48 hours after taking antibiotics.

Please get in touch if you feel like you need extra support.

Breastmilk storage

💧 At room temperature (below 25°c) for 6 hours. Be conscious this will be less in these warm temperatures.
💧 At the back of the fridge (below 4°c) for 8 days
💧 In the ice compartment of a fridge for 2 weeks
💧 In the freezer (below 18°c) for 6 months

If you're going out for the day, milk that has been stored in the fridge can be carried with ice packs in a cool bag for up to 24 hours.

Did you know that your milk will adapt to baby's needs? So in hot weather, your milk will provide all the fluids baby needs - there is no need for additional water. In fact, this can be dangerous.

From 6 months, it is ok to introduce sips of water, particularly with solids, but their primary source of hydration should be breastmilk or formula.

In warmer weather, offer breast more frequently to ensure baby remains hydrated. If your baby has formula, you may offer small sips of cooled boiled water.

Keep an eye on nappies, expecting 6 wet nappies per day in babies under 6 months.

Feedback Friday!

"The first few weeks of breastfeeding were hell for me. I couldn’t get baby to latch, I was in pain and dreaded her needing to be fed. But after attending the groups and speaking with the Buddies, I have completely turned my journey around and I’m now enjoying breastfeeding and soon to be reaching 2 months of doing so."

It's great to hear what our parents have to say about the service, and helps us to shape what we offer.

If you have any feedback for the service, please contact the service on 0333 005 0095 or 07759 708090.

What vitamins should I give my baby?

We often hear questions about what vitamins babies should have, or what you should take as a new Mum.

NHS recommendations are:
💧 Breastfeeding Mums should consider a 10mcg daily Vitamin D supplement for themselves.
🤱 Breastfed babies should be given a daily vitamin D supplement from birth (8.5-10mcg daily). This is in addition to any supplements taken by Mum.
🍼 Babies who are having more than 500ml of infant formula a day should not be given vitamin supplements. Formula is already fortified with vitamins A, C and D and other nutrients.
👧 All children aged 1 to 4 years old should be given a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D.

🐟 Vitamin D is found in certain foods, including oily fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel, red meat, and some breakfast cereals – but it's hard to get enough from food alone.

Do you have any questions about supplements?

Growth spurts usually last 2-3 days but can last longer. These may be periods of physical growth or rapid development - breastmilk is not just for growing the body but also for their brains!

Babies are likely to cluster feeding during a period of growth spurt. Babies are very clever and know this, so they are 'putting their order' in for the growth spurt they are having to tell your body to make more milk!

Have you noticed any particular growth spurt periods with your baby?
