Are you struggling with symptoms of IBS?

I have had many clients come to me with IBS symptoms. Fear of walking with friends, because of the need to dash to the toilet, go on trips, socialise and enter intimate relationships. The fear of needing the toilet keeps them from living life to the full.

When symptoms of IBS are active, it's common that the mind is in flight or fight stage. This sends the adrenalin's, stress hormones and cortisol to the tummy and the need to go to the toilet is the next step.

This is a very private and personal experience, and can be quite a lonely one as well. The person may have tried all different types of food, and still the symptoms are there.

The first session with me is around managing the mind with skills, techniques and tools to use. I ask the client to listen to a track at night, before they go to bed. It's 23 minutes long and it calms the mind. By the second week, it is normal for us to see change already. The hypnotherapy is 15-20 minutes, which starts in the second session and is focused on what the client wants that week, for example, a simple short walk without thinking of needing the toilet.

Are you struggling with overthinking?

When we are overthinking the mind goes into an unsafe place. The solution is primarily to calm the mind. This is because it is difficult to think our way out of a problem.

To go outside and move the body, leaving the phone switched off, looking around, breathing in the fresh air, swinging our arms is a good method to clear the mind. This allows us to move from an unsafe place in the mind to a safe place where we can be solution focused. When we are overthinking, the case may be that we are problem focused. And when the mind is calm, we are able to become solution focused once again.

Look after yourself.

Whether in a relationship, or single, as the seasons change, keep your exercise and mental health a priority.

Suggestions that help:
- regular walking outside in the fresh air (buy waterproofs 🙂)
- get a personal trainer for a couple of months
- join a local gym
- up the self-care (wonderful baths, spa days, a lush pot of something that smells luxurious)
- some funky wellies, so it's a pleasure to put them on
- a good book
- beautiful winter bedding
- good, nourishing, food prep
- beautiful oil diffuser
- a massage
- pedicure
- a wash and blow dry at the hairdressers

Meditation

Meditating on wholeness and positivity strengthens the solution focused part of your brain. Essentially the more you think about something the harder wired those thoughts are going to be.
In my sessions with a client I highlight this process. Then they start to understand why we take negative thoughts captive and dissolve them on the spot each time they appear. Then we redirect. This process involves meta cognition.
Managing the mind and learning these processes with tools and techniques allows you to direct your thoughts instead of thoughts directing you.
Studies have shown people doing this for only 10mins a day have a reduction in anxiety, OCD and depression.

Good morning. I would like to highlight the word 'compassion' today.

What does compassion mean to you?
Being compassionate is to deeply understand another's suffering. We empathise when we do this. Different than feeling sorry for someone, which is 'sympathy'.
When we emphasise we feel a desire to do something about it instead of just feeling sorry and moving on....
Learning to be compassionate with yourself can be foreign for some. It is common to give to others and not spending the time or care you need to heal..
It is useful to spend a few moments with this today without judging yourself and ask yourself. Am I being compassionate with myself ? Am I doing what I can to spend the time to heal and take care of myself? Do I give myself time to pause? To do nothing?

Intrusive Thoughts

Many people experience uninvited thoughts that can feel quite disturbing and sometimes quiet bizarre. They can suffer in silence because they have not got a clue why this has just popped up in their mind. Some people can think they are possessed or going completely bonkers.
Thank goodness we have neuroscience now that can explain what is going on and normalise this for people. Some people have noticed more intrusive thoughts with hormones changes, trauma and use of drugs.
When this does happen we go into fight, flight or freeze stater and switch to an unsafe mode in the brain and body. It is common too for this to happen if the body is tired or under stress. If you are exhausted then the mind is actually primed much more towards intrusive thoughts.
We learn in the sessions to soothe the system and have compassion for ourselves when this happens:)
This is just a start into the world of managing intrusive thoughts
