Yesterday, 13th January 2026, whilst we were putting rubbish in our bin outside the Pharmacy we found two sharps containers in there, which can be very dangerous. What is a sharps bin?

A sharps bin is a specialised container designed to safely collect and store used sharps, such as needles, syringes, pipettes and blades. Sharps bins are made from puncture resistant plastic and have a sealed lid with a disposal door to help minimise the risk of needlestick injuries. Proper disposal of sharps is essential to prevent injuries, reduce the risk of infections, and protect the environment.

The bin outside the shop is for Pharmacy use only, we constantly find rubbish in there that isn't ours, drinks cans, food waste etc. The Pharmacy doesn't have a licence to dispose of needles, Queen Square Surgery does but they can only take them if they know what is actually in there and where they came from so because there was no name on the two bins we don't know where they came from.

This could have been very dangerous situation if a child had found them, please do not dispose of any type of medication in this bin and especially needles, please see a member of staff and we will advise you. Thank you, please share this so that doesn't happen again.
