News Article - My Heart Member Kaitlin Lawrence, was diagnosed with a heart rhythm problem two years ago after collapsing on a netball court.

"She now has a device, called a defibrillator, fitted in her chest, which has already saved her life twice.
"It can give my heart an electric shock to get it working properly again," she explains.
"It feels like a thump when it happens. I had one recently, in February. It's a bit scary, but it works. I'm on beta-blocker tablets too to help keep my heart in the right rhythm."
Kaitlin says her condition could have been detected using a quick and simple ECG (electrocardiogram) which records the heart's rhythm."

This article explores the urgent need for greater awareness of young sudden cardiac death and the importance of cardiac screening.

It includes latest research involving more than 104,000 young people screened over ten years, showing how underlying high risk cardiac conditions can be identified before tragedy happens.

At CRY, we believe more young people should have the opportunity to access screening and information that could save lives.

According to CRY research, more than 600 young people aged 35 and under die each year in the UK from sudden cardiac death.

The end of the race was in sight - yet 26-year-old Mike Harper, an experienced runner, collapsed just 200 metres short of the half-marathon finishing line.

1 in 300 young people screened by CRY have a hidden potentially life-threatening heart condition.

Most will never know, unless they're screened.

We're urging Parliament to debate making cardiac screening available to all young people. But we need 100,000 signatures.

Sign the petition. It takes 30 seconds and could save young lives!

Fund population cardiac screening for every young person when they reach age 14 years. The screening should be undertaken with a review of family history and electrocardiogram (ECG) followed up where necessary with echocardiogram (heart scan).

We’re often asked for recommendations on travel insurance, and we understand how challenging it can be to find cover when you have a pre-existing condition.

While CRY does not recommend or endorse any companies, we do provide a list of insurers on our website that can offer medical cover for people with cardiac conditions.
