Oestrogen and progesterone play a role in salt water balance, the health of your inner ear, fluid balance and circulation and also the lubrication of ear.
Inside your inner ear are tiny structures responsible for balance and spatial awareness, helping your brain understand whether you’re standing, lying down or moving. Hormonal changes can affect the fluid and signalling within this system, which may contribute to dizziness, vertigo or feeling off balance.
The tiny hair cells within the inner ear can also become more sensitive, which may contribute to symptoms such as:
• Ringing
• Whooshing
• Buzzing
• Pulsing sounds (tinnitus)
Some research also suggests that changes in hormones across the menstrual cycle, particularly during the luteal phase when progesterone rises and falls, may impact coordination and balance. This might explain why some women notice more clumsiness, bump into things more often or do things like stub their toe(ouch).
Ways you can support this:
• Stay hydrated and support electrolyte balance
• Support your nervous system and HPA axis
• Prioritise sleep and blood sugar balance
• Increase resilience to stress
• Eat protein and healthy fats to support hormone production
• Limit caffeine and alcohol
Of course, persistent vertigo, tinnitus or sudden hearing changes should always be checked by a healthcare professional.
