This week is Learning Disability Week, so we're sharing how thanks to your donations, thousands of patients with learning disabilities and autism are having a better hospital experience across Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

Since 2022, more than 13,000 care bags have been given to patients, helping reduce anxiety in what can often be an overwhelming environment.

Each bag includes sensory items like noise-cancelling headphones, fidget toys and accessible information, helping patients feel calmer, more comfortable and better supported.

With 98% positive feedback and recognition across 44 NHS trusts, this initiative is helping tackle health inequalities and ensure every patient feels seen and valued.

Thank you for helping us create more moments that matter at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust💜

When 11‑year‑old Annabelle began radiotherapy at Leeds Cancer Centre, she faced something no child should have to endure.

Because of the complexity of her treatment, Annabelle needed to wear a full-face immobilisation mask during every radiotherapy session to keep her perfectly still.

For an adult, this can be challenging, yet for a child already coping with fear, nausea and pain, it was especially distressing.

💬 “I’d be throwing up in my mask every single time… I’d dread it. I just wished I could go home.” — Annabelle

Her mum, Melanie, describes watching her daughter go through this treatment as traumatic and adds that anything which could reduce the distress would have made a world of difference.

Donate to our Leeds Cancer Appeal and help us raise £1 million to fund technology to transform radiotherapy for patients removing the need for face masks and permanent tattoos: https://www.leedshospitalscharity.org.uk/Appeal/leeds-cancer-appeal

Katie Dowson, from Ilkley, first started supporting Leeds Hospitals Charity through the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease appeal in memory of her beloved dad, Warren, who died from MND in 2018.

Katie said: “I started fundraising shortly after my dad’s diagnosis; I decided I wanted to do it, as a way to support my dad. I have now done 10 different challenges in his name, raising money for MND-related causes, including Leeds Hospitals Charity. Dad didn’t live to see all of my challenges, but I know he would be so proud.

"In Summer 2023, I took part in the Leeds Bear Hunt, which was an interactive art trail, organised by Leeds Hospitals Charity. I was inspired to learn about initiatives within Leeds Children’s Hospital, including Play therapy and the use of VR headsets.

"Once I started supporting Leeds Hospitals Charity for the MND Appeal, I got exposed to all the other amazing things they do. I'm from Leeds, I was born here, and I really care about what happens here. I'm proud to give to a local charity as I know that monthly gift will be spent on making things better for patients, across all our local hospitals.”

A message from our CEO, Esther Wakeman on Kevin Sinfield being awarded a Knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours.

"On behalf of everyone at Leeds Hospitals Charity, I would like to congratulate Sir Kevin Sinfield on his Knighthood. We are all delighted that he has been honoured in recognition of his incredible support for the MND community. Last year, we opened the Rob Burrow Centre for MND, which simply would not have been possible without his initial commitment and ongoing support. His support for the MND community - raising millions of pounds and awareness through his remarkable challenges has inspired so many people."

At the opening of the Chapel Allerton Hospital Rehabilitation Garden, we spoke to 22-year-old Rose, a former patient who benefited from horticultural therapy in the new space.

Rose was in the middle of a shift at her family restaurant, when she experienced a life-threatening bleed on the brain.

Doctors at Leeds Teaching Hospitals discovered she had an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), an abnormal, tangle of blood vessels on the brain, which can increase the risk of a brain haemorrhage.

A couple of weeks later, Rose was referred to Chapel Allerton Hospital, where she found a new love for gardening as part of her rehabilitation.

“Coming into such a big place like this with your two year old is frightening, but being welcomed by the teams around the hospital, especially the Play Team it's fantastic. Just to feel that warmth and to feel welcomed somewhere, it sort of becomes a home over time."

Play isn’t just about fun - it’s about comfort, connection, and helping children feel like themselves again 💜

On International Day of Play, we’re celebrating the difference the Play Team at Leeds Children's Hospital makes for young patients like Robin and their families.

Because of play, poorly children can feel less afraid, understand their illness, and find moments of joy during the hardest days.

Thanks to your support, the Play Team at Leeds Children’s Hospital can be there for children and families every single day, but this can only continue with your help.

💛 It costs £106 to fund a Play Worker for a day. Together, we can deliver play to every child who needs it.

This Diabetes Awareness Week, we're sharing how because of play, children with diabetes can better understand their condition.

Emmie was diagnosed with diabetes when she was two and half years old.

After lots of visits to the GP, Emmie was referred to Leeds Children's Hospital for tests, where doctors told her mum Vicky she had dangerously high blood glucose levels.

Emmie now visits the hospital clinic four times a year, and the team try their best to make the experience as fun as possible for young patients like her.

Vicky took Emmie to the Teddy Bear Clinic, supported by the Play Team, where she was able to meet other children with diabetes and gain a better understanding of her condition through play, she told us:

“I’ve seen a huge difference in Emmie’s confidence and knowledge of her condition since we started attending events like the Teddy Bear Clinic. Emmie has been able to make friends, and I’ve also benefitted from peer support by meeting other parents. The team really go above and beyond to help children living with diabetes be able to live a normal, happy and healthy childhood.”

Thanks to your donations we are able to fund the Play Team. Help us continue to bring play to children in hospital by donating to our appeal: https://www.leedshospitalscharity.org.uk/appeal/leeds-childrens-hospital
