Being. 🩵👁️✨

The lesson I learnt after burning out pursuing academic success and ended up with a diagnosis of blood cancer.

Amongst all this doing, there must be space to be.

It provides clarity, trust and understanding.

Why your “self” is the biggest obstacle. 🤎

In 2018, after a challenging year at university and the onset of chronic pain, I was exposed to a more direct path of meditation.

I learnt that continuous suffering requires a strong sense of self. When there is a strong sense of “me”, every event becomes personal. “I am failing”, “I am being judged”, or “I am behind”.

Without this sense of a central character, experiences simply happen. Pain still occurs, but the suffering - the story about the pain - has no one to cling to. With this, I began to experience profound states of peace and liberation.

Through regular facilitation, I have found ways to safely integrate this path of non-suffering into daily life. It doesn’t mean abandoning your personality, but more so losing the mental construct of being a separate individual. This allows for a deep, spacious rest that exists beyond the mind.

I have written a free short guide on the three strands of meditation practice I use to integrate this: Mindfulness, Non-Duality, and Love & Acceptance.

Read the full guide through the link in my bio. ☺️✨🙏

At present, my mobility only really allows for short flat walks. There are pains and aches in my ankles, knees, hips, back and shoulder making walking difficult.

Most of these chronic pain issues evade the tests, scans and procedures I’ve had carried out at hospitals, leaving doctors and other healthcare professionals perplexed.

Naturally, from experiencing years of poor health, I have looked elsewhere for answers and found some.

From my own view and lived experience, I believe that disease and dysfunction are caused by stress. Not just stress from being overworked. But the toxins we encounter in our foods and environments. From supressing feelings on a daily basis. From not being our authentic selves - just to fit in. From living in the past and future. From believing we are separate from the world around us. The list goes on.

Recently, I have approached wellness by playfully reducing stress across the board. And despite carrying multiple injuries and discomfort, I generally feel good energetically and more in control of my health.

Some changes I have made involve counselling, taking the time to process past/current emotions, learning about chakra balancing, saying no more often, meditating on interconnectedness, singing and joining a choir (big up ), going outside a little more, smiling, doing further teacher training, and prioritising being myself.

I feel optimistic that my health will continue to respond positively to this. Let’s see.

Here are a few photos taken in the Langdales last weekend. I am aiming to post a little less on here but with honest offerings when I do. ☺️

Join us for a calming and creative session that blends mindfulness and drawing in a relaxed, supportive environment. ✨

Led by myself, you’ll be guided through simple mindfulness practices to help you slow down, connect with the present moment, and awaken your senses. From there, Cally will take you into a gentle drawing session - no experience needed - focusing on observation, expression, and enjoying the process rather than the outcome.

Whether you’re looking to unwind, reconnect with your creativity, or simply try something new, this workshop offers a space to pause, breathe, and create. 🤗

All materials provided. Includes tea and homemade cake. Everyone welcome.

📆 Sunday 9th November
⏱️ 2pm - 4pm

A beautiful session in a beautiful space. Thanks to all that came. We took the opportunity to arrive in presence, chat about mindfulness, explore our sense perceptions, then closed with an art therapy exercise, inspired by some of Joshua’s poetry.

This exhibition has really had big impact on my character’s energy. I feel inspired, sad, content, moved - many things. I encourage you to take yourself there if you haven’t already.

I’m running a free mindfulness workshop next Tuesday, 16th September, in Leeds City Centre, and you’re very welcome to come along!

It’s part of an art exhibition featuring the work of Josh Leader, a talented artist and family friend who sadly died by su***de in 2022. This event is a heartfelt tribute to Josh and his incredible artwork, which is on display in a really beautiful space curated by his family.

The workshop will be a chance to slow down, connect, and reflect — surrounded by inspiring art. If you’re in town or free that evening, it would be lovely to see you there.

All the details are below – feel free to drop in or bring someone with you.

🗓️ Tuesday 16th September
🕣 6pm-8pm at Moda NYSQ, Leeds
😌 Free, no experience needed

“This mindfulness workshop with Jake is designed to show you the benefits of living deeply in the present moment. You can expect a variety of gentle mindfulness practices and self-awareness techniques in conjunction with readings of Joshua’s poetry. Please note this workshop is designed to be suitable for beginners so please feel free to come down as you are and give it a go.

Jake will start the session with a talk and open discussion about what mindfulness is, how to practice it & why it’s important for our health. This will be followed by a gentle meditation of the five senses, taking in the many artworks and surrounding space of the exhibition. We shall then close the workshop with a creative-expression exercise, exploring our own energy and emotions freely on paper using colouring pens, pencils and pastels.”

I hope to see some of you there. 😊
