Fantastic day out yesterday at the Saltaire Dragonboat Festival with team Yorkshire Brain Power!

Yorkshire Brain Power did us proud, coming 1st twice and 2nd once out of their heats. Unfortunately they did not make it into the finals but came 12th out of 38 entries and competed against teams from the Army, Police and the under 18 GB squad so a magnificent result. At the event last year we came 33rd out of 38 so what a tremendous achievement this year. The team was made up of consultants, registrars, pharmacists, nurses and admin and so far has raised £670 for Leeds Cares. If anyone would like to contribute please do so by clicking on

Fabulous L25!

Team of the Week - L25

The team on L25 care for a large ward of neuro patients. They have been nominated for Team of the Week by our chaplaincy team, after they went the extra mile to organise a wedding for one of their patients.

They arranged an emergency marriage for the patient and his partner including sorting out the registrar, flowers, a suit for the groom, balloons, food, a photographer, a bouquet and a stag do for the groom to have in his room on the ward.

The team also liaised with the team in chaplaincy for a wedding blessing to be held in St Luke’s chapel at the LGI that all their family and friends came to. The whole team went above and beyond to ensure that this was a good memory for the family and everything that the patient wanted.

Well done to everyone on L25 who made this happen - a fantastic example of The Leeds Way in action!

Congratulations to Margaret Chambers!
50 Years of NHS service.
What an amazing achievement!
Well done and much love for your well earned retirement.
From all in neurosciences

Margaret started working in the NHS in 1966 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary as a trainee medical secretary. She worked there until 1972 when she left to have her family, although she continued to work at Huddersfield 2 nights per week until 1975.

In 1975 Margaret started a new job at Huddersfield as a medical secretary until 1976 when she left Huddersfield to work for one of their consultants in his private practice.

She stayed there until 1983 when she left to start work at Pinderfields Hospital as a medical secretary until 1997 when she retired. She worked from home for the next 10 years doing medico-legal work, as well as working part time at LGI as the trauma secretary in orthopaedics for 6 months and then 6 years working for Nick Phillips in neurosurgery.

In 2003 Margaret retired again but a month later was contacted by LGI asking if she would work on the “secretarial bank”. She has worked continuously from then in neurosciences and urology.

However, Margaret has now decided that enough is enough and is retiring on 31/3/19 (her last working day is 14/3/19).

She will be sadly missed by all in neurosciences and we wish her a very happy retirement.

Thank you to everyone who has sent Big Thank You messages for our teams. There is still plenty of time to share yours at https://bigthankyouleeds.co.uk

Dr Melissa Maguire received this message from Samantha who wanted to thank her for her care:

"Big Thank You to Dr Melissa Maguire at LGI for taking over my care a year ago and giving me clarity and much needed answers as to what is causing my Seizures with proactive thinking and diagnostics not previously explored. I’m very grateful to have such a great team and services looking after me. Thank You!"

Team of the Week - Neurosurgery Secretaries.

There are six neurosurgery secretaries in the team and their main role is as a medical secretary and they also do some theatre scheduling for their consultants.

The team work in a very busy department that deals with patients that have had anything from head injuries through to brain tumours. They speak to patients and relatives and play a pivotal role in processing life changing results on a daily basis.

They are extremely diligent in their day to day work and take pride in dealing with their patients in a calm and caring way. This was highlighted when they were nominated in their CSU awards for an Admin Spotlight award and a reduction in complaints due to change of working practice that they spearheaded.

Their continued hard work and dedication to our patient group and the ability to take on any challenge even if it means a change of practice for them highlights what a great team they are within the Trust.
