🚨 *Raising the temperature on the GP Unemployment Crisis in England* 🚨

🔥 UK trained GPs should be seeing patients, not seeking jobs

🩺Another year’s cohort of GP Registrars are about to complete their training.

🤦Many have no roles to go to or too few hours NHS work.

HANG ON, WHAT?

🗓️Every single month, there are 50,000,000 contacts to England’s 6,300 practices 😱

☀️Every single day there are 1,500,000 patients cared for in general practice across England 😱

⏰ Yet still we have the “8am scramble” Patients struggling to get an appointment, & overworked GPs…

YEAH BUT WHY CAN’T THESE GPs GET NHS JOBS?🤨

💷 Practice finances are squeezed - there simply isn’t enough spare funding available to create _new GP roles to expand the practice workforce_ without putting those practices into financial crisis - which could then risk closure (like any small business)

💥 *BMA SURVEY*
▪ 15% of GPs CAN'T FIND ANY WORK - and this will only get worse when GP registrars complete their training come August 1st
▪ 56% WANT MORE NHS HOURS but there is no funding to expand practices to create new roles
▪ Newly qualified GPs are applying for 13+ JOBS on average – this is climbing
▪ 51% OF NEWLY QUALIFIED GPs HAVE NOT SECURED AN NHS GP ROLE two years after training

🏥 *Why this matters?*
→ These young Drs will look for GP careers outside the U.K. - which is MADNESS when we need them here and now in the NHS
→ General practice is the “front door” of the NHS managing 90% of NHS demand with 10% of the budget and, unsurprisingly, COLLAPSING under pressure
→ Deprived areas are being hit hardest. Patient care is faltering

🍏 *DOCTOR’s SOLUTIONS*
1️⃣ _urgent ringfenced funding_ for additional newly qualified GP roles _based in practices_
2️⃣ _A national GP retention strategy for England_ to keep hold of the GPs whose training has been funded by UK taxpayers, reducing inequalities and boosting continuity of care
3️⃣ _Expansion of GP roles for additional GPs in practices_ to support the Govt agenda to fix the NHS

The BMA’s annual GP Opinion Survey gathers GPs' views on current issues and opportunities facing General Practice. These views will inform this year’s contract negotiations and our longer-term strategy as we work for better pay and conditions for GPs in England.

We want to hear from as many GPs and GP Registrars as possible. We would be very grateful if you could you share the survey link with your LMC networks. The more responses we receive, the stronger GPC England’s position will be as we enter negotiations for the next GP contract.

This survey is open to all fully qualified GPs and GP Registrars ST3 and above in England, including non-BMA members. We are interested in the views of all GPs: partners, salarieds, locums, GP registrars at ST3 and above, whether they work in practices, wider primary care roles, trusts, urgent care, or secure or out-of-hours settings.

We ask for a GMC number so we can corroborate responses as coming from qualified GPs based in England, but all responses will be anonymised.
