A huge thank you to our Chief Officer Rajshri Owen for hosting another highly engaging and practical contractor webinar focused on Pharmacy First – Referrals, Claims & Income Optimisation.

The session was developed directly in response to contractor feedback following our Navigating the Numbers event and reflects CPL&R’s continued commitment to listening to contractors and providing meaningful operational support for community pharmacy teams across Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland.

The discussions throughout the evening highlighted both the challenges and opportunities facing contractors — from Pharmacy First gateway points and referrals through to claims optimisation and service sustainability.

We are incredibly grateful to Dane and Paul for supporting the session and sharing their expertise, and thank you to all contractors and pharmacy teams who attended and engaged so openly.

At CPL&R we remain committed to ensuring contractors feel supported, informed and represented as community pharmacy continues to evolve within an increasingly complex healthcare landscape. Altaf Vaiya Shezad Alimahomed

Following the success of our “Navigating the Numbers” event, we wanted to create another focused and practical session to support teams across Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland.

That is why we are pleased to be hosting our upcoming online event:

🚨 Pharmacy First: Referrals, Claims & Income Optimisation 🚨

📅 Tuesday 19th May
⏰ 7:30pm – 8:45pm
💻 Online via Microsoft Teams

This session will focus on helping pharmacy teams better understand:

✅ Referral pathways and system working
✅ Claims accuracy and commonly missed opportunities
✅ Maximising Pharmacy First income
✅ Improving monthly performance
✅ Strengthening engagement with local practices and PCNs

We are also delighted to be joined by system colleagues Dane and Paul, who will be sharing valuable insights and practical learning with contractors.

Importantly, this session is not just for pharmacists — it is relevant for the whole pharmacy team, as everyone plays an important role in service delivery, claims processes and patient engagement.

As pressures across community pharmacy continue, it is increasingly important that contractors feel confident, informed and supported to maximise opportunities available through clinical services.

We look forward to welcoming as many contractors and pharmacy teams as possible on the evening.

Great to see so many of our Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland community pharmacy contractors join our Chief Officer Rajshri Owenr Hamza Rafiq from Scope Training for yesterday’s CPTAP webinar delivered in collaboration with Scope Training.

The session provided a really useful overview of the Community Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship Programme (CPTAP), the funding support available and how pharmacies can utilise this opportunity to continue developing and strengthening their workforce.

Investing in our pharmacy technician workforce is essential as community pharmacy continues to expand its clinical and operational role within primary care.

Thank you to everyone who attended and engaged in the discussion.

If you were unable to join us live and would like to learn more about the funding offer and programme, you can watch the webinar recording here:

Yesterday, Community Pharmacy Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland (CPL&R) was proud to host
Navigating the Numbers – Securing the Future with our Chief Officer Rajshri Owen

This wasn’t just another event — it was a necessary conversation.

The financial and operational pressures facing community pharmacy are no longer emerging… they are fully here:

Pharmacies are worse off than a year ago
A £2bn+ structural funding gap remains
Many businesses are operating at, or below, sustainability
And we are already seeing the impact on patient access through reduced opening hours

Our reflection as an LPC:

What stood out most was the honesty in the room.

Contractors are not only aware of the challenges — they are actively seeking solutions. There was a strong appetite for practical support, particularly around:

Understanding and managing business performance
Maximising claims and income
Making services work both clinically and financially

There was also a clear message:

👉 Community pharmacy must be better positioned within the system
👉 And that requires both local and national alignment

Our thoughts moving forward:

As an LPC, our role is to:

Advocate for the sector at system level
Provide practical, tangible support to contractors
Create opportunities for shared learning and collaboration

We have already begun exploring further support around claims and income optimisation, following the feedback from yesterday.

Because whilst we cannot control the funding environment, we can support how contractors respond to it.

Thank you to all our speakers, sponsors and contractors who contributed to such an open and constructive session.

The challenge is clear — but so is the opportunity for collective action.

Spring often brings a welcome change in weather — but for many families, it also brings a rise in sore throats.

Between seasonal allergies and lingering winter infections, it can be difficult for parents to know what’s really going on.
Is it:
🤧 Hay fever?
🦠 A viral infection?
⚠️ Or something like strep that may need treatment?

The pattern of symptoms is key.

Itchy eyes, sneezing, and a runny nose often point towards allergies
Fever, swollen glands, and pain on swallowing may suggest infection
Mild symptoms that improve with rest and fluids are often viral

👉 The challenge is knowing when to seek help — and where.

This is where community pharmacy is stepping up.

Through the Pharmacy First service, parents across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland can access quick, accessible advice and treatment for sore throats — without the need for a GP appointment.

Highly trained pharmacists can:
✔️ Assess symptoms and rule out more serious conditions
✔️ Provide treatment where appropriate, including antibiotics under clinical pathways
✔️ Offer reassurance and self-care advice
✔️ Support families at the point they need it most

No appointments. No long waits. Just accessible healthcare on your doorstep.

As we move through spring, it’s worth remembering:
Community pharmacy isn’t just convenient — it’s a vital front door to the NHS. Rajshri Owen Altaf Vaiya

Thank you for joining us and for your engagement during the session.

As an LPC, we felt it was important to bring together community pharmacy, Turning Point, and Exchange Supplies to have a more open and practical discussion around the Needle & Syringe Programme (NSP) and the vital role pharmacy teams play in harm reduction.

We recognise that NSP services can present both opportunities and challenges for contractors, and sessions like this are key to ensuring teams feel supported, informed, and confident in delivering these services safely and effectively.

We will continue to work closely with commissioners and partners to ensure that:

The value of community pharmacy in this space is recognised
Services are appropriately supported and resourced
Feedback from contractors is heard and acted upon

If you have any further questions, feedback, or areas you would like us to raise on your behalf, please do share — your insight is essential in shaping how these services develop locally.

Thank you again for your ongoing commitment to supporting some of the most vulnerable patients in our communities. Rajshri Owen

Last week, our Chief Officer Rajshri Owen met with the Chief Officer for BLMK & Northamptonshire.

As NHS structures continue to evolve and ICB footprints develop, it is increasingly important that we work collaboratively across system boundaries to ensure community pharmacy is well positioned within this changing landscape.

The discussion focused on how we can work more synergistically, sharing insight, aligning priorities and strengthening our collective voice across the wider system.

Community pharmacy plays a vital role in neighbourhood health, prevention and improving access, and by working together we can ensure the sector is not only responding to change—but helping to shape it.

We look forward to continuing this collaborative approach and strengthening relationships across the region.
