One Mistake, A Lifetime of Consequences
Joy in Health, in partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund, recently held another impactful Early Action Youth Safety Interactive Workshop under the theme:
“One Mistake, A Lifetime of Consequences.”
This important session is part of our ongoing series of workshops designed to help young people understand criminal records, how far their consequences can reach, and the practical steps they can take to protect their future.
Ijeoma Korie (HR - CIPD) expertly anchored the session, with Dr Yvonne Sanusi facilitating an engaging, interactive session.
Our distinguished Speaker of the Day, Dr Joycelin Eze-Okubuiro of the University of Leicester, delivered a powerful and practical presentation on why conversations like this are so important.
She explained that many young people can make one poor decision under pressure, boredom, peer influence or anger. A caution, conviction or criminal record received at the age of 15 or 16 can quietly close important doors later in life - at 25, 35 and beyond.
The truth is that many young people, and even many adults, don't fully understand how the system works.
But as our speaker rightly reminded us:
This is not about fear. It is about accurate and practical knowledge.
Participants gained a better understanding of:
🔹 The difference between an arrest, a caution and a conviction
🔹 What a criminal record really means
🔹 What it means for a record to become “spent”
🔹 What a DBS check can reveal
🔹 How a criminal record can affect employment, education, travel, finances and family life
🔹 Practical strategies for avoiding offending
🔹 Where young people can access free help and support in Leicester
The session was informative, interactive and eye-opening. It gave participants practical knowledge to help them make better decisions and protect opportunities that might otherwise be lost.
And, of course, we cannot forget the plenty of delicious chops to take away during and after the session! 😄🍲
If you missed this opportunity, don't worry - this is just one of many workshops planned to inform, empower and protect young people.
So get ready for the next one. Your future is too important to leave to one mistake.
See you at the next session!
