Welcome to another member of the team, meet Mark 💙

Hello, I'm Mark. I'm a disability-affirmative Integrative Therapist (MBACP and NCPS registered). I specialise in working with disabilities, chronic illness and trauma. I am person-centred and Trauma-Informed, using multiple approaches including Transactional Analysis and CBT. I'm also the incoming Clinical Lead at Spokz People, where I facilitate group therapy and support for disabled people, and train other therapists to work with people with disabilities.

I have a life-long progressive neurological condition and use a wheelchair part-time, so I understand the challenges faced by people with a disability. I've also seen the incredible strength, resourcefulness and resilience of the disabled community – including in those who struggle to see it in themselves.

I use a person-centred approach, which means I focus on you as a whole individual first, not just the problems you are facing. I work with a wide range of issues, and specialise in working with disability, chronic illness and trauma. This can include the impact of disability or illness on:

self-esteem
relationships
health and wellbeing, including anxiety and depression
work and finances
relationships to care and independence
sense-of-self, including internalised ableism
loneliness and belonging
grief and loss

Being trauma-informed, I prioritise a safe and gentle approach to trauma recovery, and work with all kinds of trauma and difficult life experiences. I also use polyvagal theory, which works with the impact of trauma on the body.

I work with people in recovery from addiction. I've been in recovery for addiction for over 7 years, so I understand the challenges of recovery, especially around cannabis and alcohol.

I am disability-affirmative, LGBTQIA+ friendly and welcome people from all walks of life to my practice, regardless of race, religion, or socio-economic background.

💜 World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day 💜

“You’re not crazy. You’ve been conditioned.”

One of the most common things I hear from new clients is:

• “I feel like I’m going mad.”
• “I don’t know what’s real anymore.”
• “I don’t know who I am.”
• “Why can’t I just leave?”

If any of those words resonate with you, please hear this:

🔹 You are not broken.
🔹 You are not weak.
🔹 You are not to blame.

Narcissistic abuse rarely starts with obvious warning signs. It often happens gradually, through manipulation, criticism, blame, control, guilt and confusion.

Over time, you begin questioning your instincts, your thoughts and your reality. You stop trusting yourself and start believing the version of you that someone else has created.

But your voice is still there.

The person you were before the abuse is still there too.

As someone who has both lived through abuse and spent years supporting survivors, I understand how confusing, isolating and frightening it can feel.

Healing doesn’t begin with having all the answers. It begins with being heard.

That’s where our work starts:

▫️ No shame
▫️ No judgement
▫️ No pressure
▫️ Just understanding, support and a safe space to be yourself

If you’re scared to reach out, that’s okay. Many people are.

You don’t have to be ready to leave.
You don’t have to tell me everything.
You don’t even have to know what you need.

You just need to take one small step.

💙 Today could be the first step towards finding yourself again.

One thing I’ve realised is that loads of people think about counselling but never actually reach out because they’re worried about things like:

“I wouldn’t even know what to say!”

“What if I cry?”

“What if it’s awkward?”

“What if my problems aren’t serious enough?”

“What if I can’t open up?”

These are completely normal thoughts (in fact I even have some of these thought when I start with a new counsellor!).

Your first session is really just a chat with someone who’s there to listen, not judge you, pressure you, or tell you what to do.

You don’t need to have the perfect words.

You don’t need to be in crisis.

You don’t need to have everything figured out - far from it in fact!

You just need to take that first step 🤍

As many of you know, I run a counselling service where we offer low-cost counselling and sometimes free sessions too.

Something that genuinely surprises me is how often people open up to me when I’m out with friends, family or networking etc. and I’ll say:

“If you’d like somebody to talk to, let me know and I’ll arrange some sessions for you.”

But so many people never take that step.

And I’ve realised there are usually a few reasons why…

1. People are scared.

A lot of people think counselling means walking into a room and immediately telling a stranger your deepest, darkest secrets.

It doesn’t.

You only talk about what you want to talk about.

Counselling is about building trust, safety and feeling heard without judgement. And honestly, when people finally do feel safe enough to open up, the relief they often feel is huge 🤍

2. It feels overwhelming.

Sometimes people know they’re struggling but the thought of actually doing something about it feels exhausting.

But if nothing changes… nothing changes!

Counselling isn’t somebody telling you what to do. It’s having somebody alongside you whilst you work things through at your own pace.

3. People think there must be a catch.

There genuinely isn’t 🤍

The sessions are safe, confidential, supportive and completely client-led.

Sometimes people just need somebody to listen, understand and help them feel less alone.

So if you’ve been thinking about counselling for a while, maybe this is your sign to finally take that step 🤍

A few people commented on my post yesterday saying “this is just normal life.”

This got me thinking because for many people, it probably is.

But constantly feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, anxious, and disconnected from yourself shouldn’t be something we just accept.

Many of us have learned to keep functioning no matter how heavy life feels.

Work.
Children.
Responsibilities.
Life.

It can feel relentless!

But common doesn’t mean healthy. You deserve more than just surviving.

And you don’t have to carry it all alone 💙
