NHS Shetland Cardiology is thrilled to now be able to provide our patients with a Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE) service on Island.

TOE is an advanced form of Cardiac Ultrasound where we pass a probe down the food pipe of a sedated patient. Because the probe is then so close to the heart, we are able to get much more detailed images compared to Transthoracic Echos (TTE) - scans using a probe on the chest. This is really useful when we are looking for things like infections of the heart valves.

Since starting in April 2021 we have now saved 25 patients from having to travel to mainland Scotland for this important investigation. This avoids the cost and inconvenience associated with a 12 hr ferry each way or 1 hr plane and speeds up the Diagnostic process. We are so very grateful to our colleagues in Anaesthetics and Theatres for helping to make this a reality as well as the imaging Consultant Cardiologists at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for their invaluable expertise in helping us to report our scans.

Last week NHS Shetland hosted NHS Scotland Chief Executive Officer and Director General of Health and Social Care, Caroline Lamb, and National Clinical Director, Jason Leitch.

The Shetland Cardiac Physiology Department where invited to share our experiences over the past year and how we have dealt with some of the unique Shetland challenges.
There have been numerous changes within the department, and this was amazing opportunity to share these experiences.

Caroline was enormously impressed by how we have worked together and innovated to find solutions to the problems caused by our unique geography.

As seen in the BBC series Island Medics, the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Shetland is home to the most remote Cardiology Department in the UK.

We're 110 miles from the most northern tip of Scotland, serving a population of just 22,000 permanent residents who live in the middle of the North Sea.

We're not carrying out cutting edge procedures, we're not doing groundbreaking research, we can't implant pacemakers and we don't have a cath lab!

But what we are doing is making the most of our staff and investing in technology to deliver the best possible care we can in one of the wildest and most special places imaginable.

Follow us to keep up to date with stories, case studies and developments from the top Cardiology department in the UK (by latitude.)
