Taken from the poem, For the Fallen, by Laurence Binyon, “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the year condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.”

With Guy Fawkes night coming up, a lot of us will be going to a fireworks show.
Although the idea of wrapping up warm on a crisp November evening can fill us with excitement, the reality of the cold weather and trudging across an uneven, muddy field can make it less enjoyable and potentially aggravate some aches and pains.

Here are some tips to keep you feeling well this fireworks season:

1. Wrap up warm. If we’re feeling cold, we tense our muscles. Prolonged tension in our muscles can cause aches and pains.
2. Wear sensible shoes. You’re inevitably going to be standing around for a while, so make sure your shoes are supporting your feet to help maintain good alignment throughout your knees, hips and pelvis which in turn can help your low back.
3. Try and keep an eye on where you’re stepping. If you happen to be on uneven ground, bring a torch so you don’t get caught out by anything that may upset your gait and potentially cause joint stress or muscle strain.
4. Be aware of posture. When watching the fireworks, prolonged extension of the neck can aggravate the upper back, so make sure you change position regularly.

Now that autumn is in full swing and temperatures start to drop, it’s important to keep our backs in mind. As the weather gets cooler and barometric pressure drops, it can put more pressure on the joints which can lead to more pain. Here are some tips and tricks to help at this time of year!

1. Take breaks! The final gardening jobs are being done before winter so make sure you’re taking regular breaks if doing any heavy work like shovelling. Avoid repetitive bending and overstretching through the low back to reduce the stress put through it.
2. Keep warm! Using multiple layers is a great way to keep warm and reduce stiffness in the muscles and joints.
3. Stay active! With the days getting darker, it’s temping to do less, however it’s still important to try and do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week!
4. Warm up properly! Before any physical activity, make sure you warm up your joints and muscles to avoid injury.
