Did you know that Awareness of Lyme Disease is only 50 years old?!
This year marks 50 years since Lyme was discovered (1975-76) in Lyme, Connecticut, USA. It then took until 1981 for a certain Dr W***y Burgdorfer, researching Rocky-Mountain Spotted Fever, to connect the disease to a bacterium (burgdorferi), causing Lyme. His name was immortalised in recognition of his research.
In fact, ticks and Lyme disease (borrelia burgdorferi) have been around for millennia. The spirochete form of the bacteria has been found in fossils as well as mummified human remains indicating it has been present and evolved with nature to be the silent but catastrophic pathogen it can be.
Every year since the 1980's the month of May is recognised as Lyme Awareness Month. Why May?
Because historically, May is the month in the Northern Hemisphere when spring and warmer weather arrives, people spend more time outdoors, and ticks become more active and breed. Climate change is altering that pattern, but raising awareness is still critical as it is still a very under-reported, misunderstood and often dismissed disease.
Here at GLXG, we will be doing our part through a series of posts and re-posts of articles and stories to raise awareness.
Diagnostic testing via a blood sample is the way to know if you have Lyme disease. Unfortunately, many healthcare systems around the world are still testing using outdated testing methods which look for antibodies which for chronically ill patients are rarely successful.
To support Lyme Disease Awareness month we are offering patients who would like to find out if have Lyme and other tick-borne infections, a £50 GBP discount on their Lyme disease test* order, plus the optional addition of an EBV (Epstein Barr Virus) test for free. Internal lab research here at GLXG@Labor Susa is indicating that more and more patients with chronic Lyme often also have a chronic underlying EBV infection that is undiagnosed and therefore untreated.
Our testing techniques use the iSpot/T-Cell and ELISpot techniques for bacteria and viruses, which is now regarded as one of the best and most effective ways of testing. iSpot/T-Cell testing doesn’t just show if you are positive /negative, but ‘how much infection’ you have, which indicates the scale of the disease you are dealing with. Offer ends June 15th 2026.
*Terms & Conditions: Lyme & TBD diagnostic testing offer applies to the following panels only: Profile 0, Profile 1, Profile 2A , Profile 2B, Profile 3 and the Lyme Co-infections Viral [LCV] panels. The EBV ELISpot test can also be added on to the order as an option and is FREE of charge during this discounted offer period when ordered with a Lyme disease profile. Where the EBV test is already included within a selected testing panel, the free promotional EBV test cannot be exchanged for a further discount, credit, or reduction in the panel price. Any additional test may be added to the order at the patient or doctors' discretion, but no further discount is provided. Testing profiles (panels) are sold as a complete set, and tests cannot be removed due to the way in which the profile has been built to provide the best cost to the patient. Patients may place the order directly, or doctors/practitioners may order on their behalf. Offer ends June 15th 2026. Payment must be made on or before June 15th 2026 to qualify, however testing can be conducted any time after June 15th 2026, at the patient's convenience. Testing must be done within 12mths from date of purchase. See our website for full T&C's or contact us via [email protected] for support.
