Like so many people in our community, I can only imagine the different emotional roller coasters people are on following yesterday's tragedy.

A young boy has lost his life. A family has lost a son. Friends have lost a friend. Parents are holding their own children a little tighter. Classmates, teachers, neighbours, witnesses, emergency service personnel, healthcare professionals and many others will all be carrying the impact of what has happened in different ways.

Grief doesn't stop with those closest to the person who died. Its ripple effects can touch an entire community.

There are no perfect words at times like these. If someone wants to talk, one of the greatest gifts we can offer is simply to listen — without judgement, criticism or trying to fix their pain. We don't need to have the answers; we just need to be present.

My thoughts are with the boy's family and loved ones, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.

Please be gentle with one another in the days and weeks ahead. đź’›

This short reel really says it all 👇

It beautifully shows how children experience loss… and not just bereavement.

Loss for a child can be anything that feels like a change or disruption—friendships, family dynamics, feeling left out, or not feeling safe.

What really stood out to me was the honesty of the children… and the natural, caring response from those around them. No fixing. No shutting it down. Just being with it.

And here’s the truth—many of us were never taught how to handle emotional pain. Society hasn’t exactly equipped us with the tools to navigate the unexpected chapters life throws at us… so it’s no surprise we struggle to show children how to do it either.

We say we want children to come to us when they’re hurting…
but if we’re hiding our own feelings, what are they learning?

It’s called Helping Children with Loss… but what it really does is help you.
It gives you the awareness, the language, and the confidence to support not only the children in your care—but yourself and others too—by bringing forward the very best of you.

💛 If you want to communicate more openly, honestly, and effectively with the children in your care (and feel more equipped for life’s unexpected moments too), get in touch and let’s talk.

Christmas isn’t always joyful — and that’s okay.

For many, this season brings memories of loved ones who are no longer here, changed traditions, or losses that still ache.

If you’re carrying grief alongside the tinsel, please know this:
there is nothing wrong with you.
Be gentle with yourself.
Honour the memories that matter.
And if things feel heavy, reaching out for support is a deeply human thing to do.

Wishing you moments of peace and kindness especially to yourself this Christmas 🤍

✨ “The suitcase is being packed… but my heart feels anything but ready.” ✨

As parents, we spend years preparing our young people for this moment — encouraging independence, nudging them to grow, reminding them of their potential.

Then suddenly, the day comes when their bedroom is piled with clothes, boxes and half-packed suitcases.

They’re excited, nervous, and stepping into their own adulthood.

We’re proud, anxious about how they will get on… but we also feel the ache of loss.

The loss of everyday routines.
The sound of their laughter drifting down the hallway.
The comfort of knowing they were just in the next room, even when they do crawl home in the early hours of the morning!
Fighting for the bathroom every morning đźšż
Music blasting through the walls 🎶
Laundry mysteriously multiplying across the floor 🧺

It’s okay to admit that you need time to adjust too.
This isn’t only their milestone — it’s yours too.

✅ Acknowledge your feelings – pride, sadness, relief, even frustration. They’re all normal and natural.
✅ Talk openly – share honestly with your young person, partner, or a friend. Don’t bottle it up.
✅ Keep some routines – whether it’s Sunday calls, shared meals when they visit, or texts to check in.
✅ Stay connected, not controlling – let them grow while reminding them you’re there.
✅ Rediscover your own space – use the quieter house to focus on hobbies, friendships, or simply rest.
✅ Celebrate the wins – for them and for you. Every step into adulthood is a shared achievement.
✅ Seek support if needed – grief is about change, and talking it through can help you adjust.

🌿 Change always carries a mixture of endings and beginnings — and when we speak about it openly, it makes space for both love and growth.

đź’” When you're grieving, even joyful family moments can feel overwhelming.

Everyone else might be laughing, celebrating, and creating memories — but for you, just showing up might feel like a mountain to climb.

Maybe you're grieving a loved one who isn’t there this year.
Maybe you're carrying a quieter kind of loss — a relationship, a pet, your health, or the version of life you thought you'd have.

💛 Whatever your grief looks like, it's not what's wrong with you, — you're grieving, which is perfectly normal and natural.
