‼️ This national sunscreen day, we share our top tips to ensure your sunscreen provides you with maximum protection:

☀️ Use an SPF 30 or above to provide high protection against the sun’s UVB (burning) rays.

☀️ Make sure your sunscreen provides high protection against UVA - If it’s star rated, opt for 4 or 5 stars for superior protection.

☀️ Make sure it is in date! Sunscreen typically expires 3 years after it’s manufactured. If an expiry date is not displayed, look for an open jar symbol which will contain a number (i.e. 12M) - that’s the number of months you can safely use the sunscreen after opening.

☀️ Store in a cool, dry place! Sun protection products can expire sooner if they are left out in the sun or in a hot car because heat causes the ingredients to break down and lose efficacy!

☀️ Apply to all exposed skin liberally and evenly! People commonly don’t apply enough! It should be applied generously to provide the required level of protection.

☀️ Apply 20 minutes before going outdoors and apply another layer applied once out. Think of it like painting a wall, you need at least 2 coats to provide adequate and even coverage!

☀️ Regardless of the instructions, all sunscreens should be re-applied at least every 2 hours (more often if perspiring) and always straight after swimming!

☀️ Don’t be mislead by claims that SPF in cosmetic products such as moisturiser or foundation will provide the same protection as a ‘proper’ sunscreen. They Don’t!

☀️ Wear it daily, all-year-round! UVA stays more-or-less the same strength during daylight hours, every day of the year and can damage our skin even in the winter months.

☀️ Protecting children? Use an SPF 50+ sunscreen specifically formulated for children or babies as these are gentler on their sensitive skin.

☀️ Always use sunscreen in combination with other sun protection measures. Cover up with clothing including a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses - and seek shade between peak UV hours (11am-3pm).

⚠ How many times have you experienced sunburn?

‼ Sunburn, reddening, peeling and even tanning of the skin are clear signs of sun damage.

‼ Over-exposure to UVA and UVB causes DNA cell damage that can lead to all types of skin cancer.

☀ Cumulative sun exposure is the main cause of non-melanoma skin cancer (the most common cancer in the UK), while sunburn plays a clear role in the development of melanoma (the 5th most common cancer in the UK).

☀ Sunburn at any age, but particularly in childhood or adolescence can significantly increase your risk of developing melanoma. Skin damage builds up over time starting with your very first sunburn and the more you burn, the greater your risk becomes.

☀ In fact, a history of just FIVE sunburns - DOUBLES your risk of melanoma.

☀ PROTECT your skin by:
✅ Covering up with clothing, including a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses.
✅ Applying an SPF 30+ sunscreen, generously and evenly - and reapply at least every two hours
✅ Seeking shade during peak UV hours 11am - 3pm

‼ Daily skin protection and monthly skin surveillance is critical - it has the power to save lives!

☀ Don’t get caught out and think twice before stripping off in pursuit of a tan...

☀ UV radiation from the sun or sunbeds is a group 1 carcinogen - responsible for 90% of the UK’s most common cancer!

‼ When your skin changes colour, even if you tan rather than burn - it’s a visual warning sign that your body’s largest organ is working hard to defend itself from the damaging effects of UV radiation!

‼ Damage from UV is cumulative - meaning it builds up over time - so the more times you tan or burn, the greater your risk of developing all types of skin cancer.

🤚 ENJOY THE SUN SAFELY!

🌞 Slip on clothing - the first line of defence against UV!
🌞 Slop on SPF30+ sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours
🌞 Slap on a wide brimmed hat
🌞 Slide on UV protective sunglasses
🌞 Shade from the sun between 11am & 3pm when UV radiation is at it’s peak

‼ NEVER USE SUNBEDS!

Remember - once the tan fades, the damage remains which can result in serious consequences over time.

‼ NO TAN IS WORTH DYING FOR.

‼☀ At Skcin we feel passionate about raising awareness of this issue because the boom in cosmetic products using SPF claims as a unique selling point is misleading - and placing consumers at risk!

☀ Two years ago we spoke about this issue (including many others) at the infamous Sun Protection Conference where we were invited to present to industry leads the various issues where we consider industry to be failing. (No pressure!)

☀ We know that common misconceptions surround application and the level of protection actually afforded by products making such claims.

☀ This is fueled by lack of regulation, transparency and education - and it’s lulling consumers into a dangerous false sense of security.

☀ Unless the PRIMARY FUNCTION of the product is to protect the skin from UVA and UVB damage, then it simply cannot not be relied upon to provide adequate protection!

☀ Consumers are highly unlikely to apply the amount of moisturiser or foundation in a cosmetic product to provide the level of SPF protection it claims. And of course, reapply that amount every two hours!

☀ Such products may form some protection against small amounts of incidental sun exposure, albeit for a short time - but due to lack of transparency, instruction and education, consumers are being mislead by these claims which is putting them at risk of sun damage and skin cancer.

☀ Applying a high-factor (SPF 30+), broad-spectrum (also protects against UVA) sunscreen should form the 'foundation' of your DAILY skin care routine, and if outdoors for longer periods, it should be reapplied at least every two hours to maintain efficacy.
