During one of our recent visits, the person we were supporting decided to prepare his own meal. We stayed nearby, kept him company and allowed him to take the lead.

It can be tempting to step in and do everything, especially when it would be quicker. But support does not always mean taking over.

When it is safe, giving someone the time, encouragement and reassurance to continue with familiar tasks can help preserve their confidence, routine and sense of purpose.

Sometimes, the most supportive thing we can do is simply stay close and let them keep doing what they can for themselves.

Many families avoid talking about end of life because they worry it will take away hope.

But planning ahead is not about expecting the worst. It is about making sure someone’s voice is still heard if they later become too unwell to express what they want.

These conversations do not need to happen all at once. Begin gently, choose a calm moment and allow the person to lead.

You might simply ask:

“What would be most important to you if your health changed?”

Then listen without correcting, persuading or rushing them.

It may be an uncomfortable conversation today, but it could bring clarity and reassurance during a difficult moment later.

Have you spoken with your parents or loved ones about what matters most to them?

If you have started noticing changes in an ageing parent and are unsure what they may mean, send The Village Nurse a private message with the word “CHECKLIST” for our free family guide.

Sometimes it is difficult to know whether an ageing parent needs more support, especially when they keep reassuring everyone that they are fine.

An untouched meal, a forgotten routine or difficulty with an everyday task may mean very little on its own. It is often the repeated pattern that is worth noticing.

The Village Nurse has created a free family checklist to help you recognise everyday changes, think about what they may mean and begin a gentle conversation without taking away your parent’s independence.

There is no obligation to arrange support. It is simply a helpful place to begin.

If you would find the checklist helpful, tap the WhatsApp button and send us the word “CHECKLIST”. We’ll send you a free copy privately.

When did you first realise your parents were getting older?

Perhaps Mum started getting tired more easily. Dad stopped going out as often. Or they began calling for help with little things they once managed without thinking.

We can easily overlook these changes because, in our minds, they are still the strong and capable parents we have always known.

One change may mean very little, but a pattern is worth noticing.

What was the first change you noticed in your mum or dad?

When someone living with dementia cannot remember whether they have eaten, arguing or testing their memory may cause more confusion.

Quietly look for clues, offer a familiar snack and drink, and make it feel like something you are doing together. This supports nutrition while protecting dignity.

If missed meals become frequent or you notice weight loss, dehydration or swallowing difficulties, seek professional advice.

Gardening does not require a large garden or hours of strenuous work. For an older person, something as simple as watering a pot, choosing a plant, pulling a few weeds or picking ripe vegetables can become a meaningful part of the day. 🌱

When supporting someone living with dementia:

🌿 Choose familiar activities they previously enjoyed
🌿 Use raised pots if bending is difficult
🌿 Provide lightweight, easy to hold tools
🌿 Offer assistance without taking over
🌿 Allow plenty of time and avoid correcting how they complete the task

The activity does not need to be completed perfectly. What matters is participation, choice, enjoyment and the feeling of still being able to contribute.

Focus on what the person can still do, then provide just enough support to make it possible.

What simple outdoor activity does your loved one enjoy? 🌻

When families look for private support, they are often looking for more than help. They are looking for reassurance, dignity, consistency, and peace of mind.

The Village Nurse offers nurse led home support that helps make everyday life easier, calmer, and safer. Support can include companionship, wellbeing check ins, meal support, practical help at home, shopping or errands, appointment support, and gentle day to day assistance.

Because sometimes, it is the little things that matter most.

Sometimes it is not a big emergency. It is the quiet struggle no one sees. The missed meal, the heavy kettle, the long lonely afternoon. That is where support matters. Sometimes the smallest help can make the biggest difference.
