EPISODE 1 — WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Most people know Mamba.
Very few know the person behind it.

I moved from Somalia to the UK without knowing the language, the culture or where I belonged.

Then I found football.

Football didn’t require me to speak perfectly or fit in. If I was willing to graft, there was a place for me.

Howard Gayle, the first Black footballer to represent Liverpool, became the first person to show me the path.

No praise. No shortcuts. Just tough love and a nod when I had earned it.

I started football later than everyone around me. They were technically better, physically further ahead and understood the game in ways I didn’t.

I couldn’t control the head start they had.

But I could control how hard I worked.

So I made myself one promise:

I would become the kid nobody could outwork.

That mentality became the foundation for everything that followed.

This is where my story began.
This is where Mamba began.

You can’t expect to move explosively if you can’t control your body slowly.

Before the heavy lifts, jumps and explosive movements, you need to earn the right through the foundations:

• Mobility to access the positions
• Isometrics to build control and tissue capacity
• Stability to maintain alignment under load
• Strength to produce and absorb force
• Joint control to manage excessive asymmetries

Your body does not need to be perfectly symmetrical. But significant differences in mobility, strength or control can force other areas to compensate when speed and load increase.

Control it first.
Strengthen it next.
Then express it explosively.

That’s how you build performance without repeatedly breaking down.

One overlooked factor associated with ACL injuries is limited hip internal rotation.

Your hip needs to rotate when you sprint, plant, cut and land. If that rotation is restricted, the body may compensate further down the chain, including through greater rotational demand at the knee and tibia.

Research shows:

• In 324 elite football athletes, reduced hip internal rotation was associated with greater odds of previous ACL injury. A 30° reduction was associated with approximately 4 to 5× greater odds, depending on the limb (Bedi et al., 2016).

• Another study found ACL injured athletes averaged 23.4° of hip internal rotation compared with 30.4° in controls (Boutris et al., 2018).

• A systematic review and meta-analysis of 23 studies found people with ACL injuries had approximately 5° less passive hip internal rotation than healthy controls, although the authors warned that the evidence was heterogeneous and does not prove causation (Hogg et al., 2022).

Think of the chain:

Hip rotation → femoral control → tibial rotation → knee position → force absorption.

Limited hip internal rotation doesn’t automatically cause an ACL tear. ACL injuries are multifactorial.

But if you’re an athlete who sprints, cuts and changes direction, simply strengthening your knee while ignoring how your hip, knee and ankle work together could leave a major gap.

Don’t just train where the injury happened. Train the whole system.

Tibial rotation is one of the most overlooked movements when it comes to knee, ankle and hip function.

Your tibia isn’t designed to only bend forwards and backwards. It also internally and externally rotates as you run, land, squat and change direction.

Research shows:

• Tibial rotation is mechanically coupled with movements at the foot and knee, meaning altered rotational mechanics can change how forces are transferred through the lower limb (Levens et al., 1948).

• Excessive or poorly controlled tibial rotation can influence knee joint mechanics and ACL loading, particularly during movements involving rotation and valgus (Meyer and Haut, 2008).

• Foot mechanics can influence tibial rotation further up the kinetic chain, showing why the ankle, tibia, knee and hip shouldn’t be assessed independently (Nester et al., 2003).

Think of the chain:

Foot position → tibial rotation → knee tracking → femoral/hip control → force absorption.

If you don’t have enough rotation, or you can’t control the rotation you have, your body may find that movement somewhere else.

That’s why simply strengthening the painful knee or stretching the ankle doesn’t always solve the problem.

And tibial rotation isn’t the single cause of ACL tears, ankle sprains or hip and knee pain. Injuries are multifactorial. It’s one movement variable that needs to be assessed within the whole system.

Don’t just look at where it hurts.
Look at how the entire chain moves.

Speed and explosiveness are not built by simply moving faster or jumping more.

You need to train the qualities behind them:

⚡ Force production
⚡ Reactive strength
⚡ Coordination
⚡ Sprint mechanics
⚡ Single-leg stability
⚡ The ability to absorb and redirect force

When these qualities improve, you do not just look more athletic in training. You accelerate quicker, change direction sharper and become harder to stop when it matters.

That is the difference between exercising and training for performance.
