Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, we take time to remember those we've lost over the years and rededicate ourselves to continuing to help prevent further deaths where we can.

31/08/2026

πŸ’Š Opioid-related deaths remain a major public health concern in Europe. Preventing them requires action before an overdose occurs, during an overdose and when rapidly changing drug markets create new risks.

Join our webinar marking International Overdose Awareness Day on 31 August to hear experts discuss practical and evidence-based approaches to preventing opioid-related deaths, including continuity of care, take-home naloxone and rapid overdose alerts.

We will explore:
πŸ”΅ Continuity of care after prison release and treatment interruptions
🟒 Take-home naloxone programmes and overdose response
🟑 Rapid overdose alerts and information-sharing when drug markets change
🟣 Emerging risks linked to high-potency synthetic opioids and polysubstance use

One of our previous HIT Hot Topics speakers Phoenix and a drug checking comrade are expanding a peer-led harm reduction program to provide free, anonymous drug-checking services and resources directly to community members in the Bronx and across NYC. They’ll be directly on the ground providing these services to help counter an unpredictable supply and save lives. They're currently raising funds for essential equipment and supplies.

Help them out if you can please!

"We could be reducing drug use in our streets, freeing up police time and resources, increasing access to treatment, ending the revolving door of addiction. But that requires treating drug use primarily as a health issue, rather than a criminal justice issue,"

Bristol will treat drug use primarily as a health issue rather than a criminal justice issue.
