In general practice one of the questions I get asked the most is “What is an Adjustment?” It is probably the treatment technique we use in the clinic that is the least well understood by patients. This misunderstanding of what an adjustment is can also create fear. The purpose of this blog post is to answer some questions as to what an adjustment actually is.

"I have been going to Pro chiro now for at least six months. Initially I was suffering with lack of neck and shoulder mobility and was very hunched over. After explaining to Josh what I was experiencing he set to undoing years of bad posture and injuries. After the first session I was completely amazed at how just a few adjustments had made me feel. I felt more mobile, not in pain and incredibly felt a little taller. Since then, I have visited his practice once a month as a refresher and also to try and lose all the bad posture habits. I was in a lot of pain when I first saw Josh on someone's recommendation, and after the very first session, I felt at least 60% better. He also suggests exercises through videos which you can refer to for the right technique etc on an ongoing basis which is very helpful. 𝙉𝙚𝙘𝙠 & 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙋𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙛 💥

Neck pain is so common these days partly due to our lifestyle habits. We spend a large amount of time looking down at electronic screens in front of us, putting stress and strain on the muscles and joints of the neck.

A lot of the time, neck pain can be dramatically reduced by working on areas above and below where the pain actually is.

The specific treatment techniques we use will depend on many factors including the patient’s preferences. There is no one size fits all treatment, but we have a large treatment toolbox to pick from so if you have a preference on the type of treatment we use, just let us know!

In the past, patients were told to “take it easy” during a flare-up of low back pain. They may have been prescribed bed rest by their family physician, thinking that avoidance of movement would help relax spasming muscles and ease pain to more tolerable levels.

However, times have changed. Treatment guidelines instead recommend specific exercise (4), gentle stretches, and other ways of staying active during the recovery process. Total bed rest is to be avoided.

In fact, over 80% of people have experienced at least one episode of low back pain in their lives, and up to a quarter of adults have experienced low back pain in the last three months! That’s pretty… painful to think about, actually.

On top of this, chronic low back pain is considered the second most common form of disability worldwide and one of the most common causes for adults to see a family physician.

𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙎𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙥𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 "𝘾𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠" 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝘽𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨?

During an adjustment, there may or may not be a cracking noise produced by the joint we are adjusting. This cracking noise sounds very dramatic and important, but is in no way linked to the beneficial effects of the adjustment.
The cracking noise is produced by a bubble of gas inside the joint that gets released during the adjustment. During the adjustment this bubble of gas forms, and then very quickly the bubble “implodes” and pops. The cracking noise is just this gas bubble imploding. Its the same noise as when you click and crack your knuckles.
